M. Given Makola · R J Mokwena

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2026

Read abstract

This article explores the safety of drivers in the e-hailing industry in the light of criminal activities, regulatory challenges, and potential preventative measures. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of assaults, robberies, car hijackings, instances of malicious damage to property, and murder has risen considerably. The key safety risks of the these crimes includes armed violent attacks. E- Hailing taxis face safety risks like route deviations and potential assaults. The lack of real-time tracking transparency and driver vetting can heighten risks, especially at night or in isolated areas. Driver’s faces risk robbery, assault or disputes over fares. Inadequate safety features in apps and poor passenger screening contribute to these risks. Implementing tech security measures boosts e-hailing safety. Recommendations includes, driver and passenger verification (biometrics or ID checks), real-time GPS tracking with route sharing, in-app emergency SOS buttons linked to authorities and AI-driven driver behaviour monitoring. In South Africa, the e-hailing industry is regulated by the National Land Transport Act. A qualitative research approach was adopted and a systematic literature review was conducted to collect the data. The purpose of this study is to examine the safety concerns of drivers in the e-hailing industry. Drivers face several safety risks such as assault, robbery, hijacking and malicious damage to property, even murder. The key recommendation of this article is that the e-hailing industry enhance its security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its drivers. With this article, the authors hope to add to the scientific literature on the phenomenon under investigation. The article finds that e-hailing management has neglected the safety of drivers by failing to provide them with technological device such as dashboard cameras. In addition, e-hailing drivers have not been trained in safety and security.

Arvid Muzanenhamo

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2026

Read abstract

A fast-growing number of workers have turned to digital platforms as an alternative to traditional work arrangements. Digital platform work is assumed as short term, temporary ‘gigs’ interceded by businesses that are linking self-employed workers to clients via an application. This study explores the factors that influence the growth of gig employment in the digital economy. The study uses a systematic review to obtain relevant data from Google Scholar, Taylor and Francis and Science Direct. The study revealed that autonomy, flexibility, value creation and performance feedback motivate individuals to work as gig workers. The findings show how digital platforms have developed to attract individuals to participate as gig workers in the sharing economy. The paper contributes to the literature by highlighting factors that drives the development of digital platforms. The results of this study have implications for future research on gig employment to the society and businesses.

Digital agriculture: implications for the agricultural labour market

Emmanuel Ndhlovu

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2025

Read abstract

The advent of digital technologies and their subsequent integration in the agricultural sector has had mixed implications for various stakeholders. However, while studies on the benefits and challenges of digital transformation abound, there is limited scholarly attention on the impact of digital transformation in the agricultural labour market. This article closes this gap in the literature by exploring how digitalisation impacts the agricultural labour market. It also highlights the future trajectory of labour in agriculture under digitalisation transformation. The article a semi-systematic literature review approach and draws from existing literature in both academic and grey formats. The article shows that digital transformation has mixed outcomes for the agricultural labour market. While it smoothens operations, improve production, and accountability, it is also disrupting agricultural labour relations, compromising workers' collective bargaining power, altering income and working conditions, distorting working time and work intensity, generating discrimination in digital work, and worsening worker surveillance and control. It concludes that while highly digitally skilled workers could benefit from integrating digital tools in their operations, non-skilled, independent, and contracted workers, who are the majority in the sector, are on the losing end. It recommends that the welfare of employees be prioritised as enterprises move into digital transformation.

Perceived value of ride-hailing providers

Rana S. Roshdy · Zhou Erhua

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2020

Read abstract

Despite providing service and consumption are two sides of the same coin of value co-creation in the gig economy, value as an outcome was only investigated from the customer point of view, not from the provider. This study aims to explore the impact of algorithmic management, customer dysfunctional behavior and perceived injustice on Uber and Careem drivers perceived value in Egypt. Qualitative interviews and content analysis were employed. Thematic analysis will be used for identifying, analyzing, and reporting patterns within data. Our findings define how drivers’ perceived value is negatively influenced by algorithmic management, customer dysfunctional behavior, and perceived injustice. In order to increase drivers’ perceived value, ride-hailing companies should not only put consideration on how to improve the control of algorithmic management and customer empowerment but also have to revise their policies and decisions to provide positive value to their drivers.

The emergence of online transportation service has created a convenient way for people to obtain access to transportation. This paper was written in order to further study the forms of services provided by Grab, an online transportation company, and the benefits the drivers and customers obtain. Through a qualitative approach, the data was obtained from the Grab driver and customer of the application through sample selection technique of accidental sampling. The results obtained indicated that some of the services offered by Grab for the drivers are bonuses and points. As for the customers, Grab offers discount promos and vouchers while still actively using the application. The benefits received by the drivers when joining Grab are a flexible and unbinding working hour as well as new experiences. While for the GrabBike customers, the benefits they receive usually in line with their needs, the price Grab provided are affordable, worth the services received. The convenience offered by GrabBike which is of how easy it is to order only via mobile phone, without having to leave the house, then just wait and then the online motorcycle taxi (ojek) will arrive, this kind of practicality is the reason why users prefer online motorcycle taxi (ojek) service compared to others.
