Dynamic modelling of the relationship between financial leverage and firm value of selected firms quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange

Umar Abbas Ibrahim · AbdulQudus Isiaka

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

This study examined the long-run effect of financial leverage on firm value with evidence from a sample of 62 firms quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, over the five-year period between 2014-2018. The level of financial leverage as measured by the Debt-Equity ratio while firm value was represented by Tobin’s Q Market-Book Value Ratio. The study contributes to the literature by appraising the dynamic dimensions of the causal relationship between firm value and financial leverage, an investigation that has remained elusive in indigenous studies. The study determined the degree of long-term causality by employing an auto-regressive model estimated by the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) technique. The regression results show that financial leverage has a significant positive effect on the firm value both in the short and long run, while the result of the correlation analysis carried out reveals that there is a significantly positive and strong linear relationship between the time series of firm value and its lagged version implying that firm value does not demonstrate traits of Mean reversion. The Management of these companies was advised to optimize firm value by undertaking quality projects and relying more on debts for funding.

Working capital management and financial performance of non financial quoted companies in Nigeria

Umar Abbas Ibrahim · Abdulqadir Isiaka

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

This study examines the effect of working capital management on the financial performance of Non-financial companies quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange over the period 2014 – 2018 while using a panel research design. This work is unique because it considers a sample of 71 companies drawn from all the 10 non-financial sectors of the NSE. Unlike most extant studies, financial performance was captured by earnings per share as a proxy, while the right-hand side variable being working capital management was denominated by Accounts receivable period, Inventory turnover period, and Accounts payable period. This study also considered the effect of some control variables namely annual capital expenditure, age of firm, GDP,  firm size, growth of the company, and firm leverage on EPS.  Data were retrieved from the Nigerian Stock Exchange 2019 Factbook. The model estimation technique adopted was the Pooled Ordinary Least Squares, fixed effect, and random-effect methods. Results from this study are consistent with the theoretical position that all aspects of working capital management have a significant effect on financial performance. While ITP and ACP were negatively related to EPS, APP was found to have a positive relationship with EPS. The research results also reveal that although all the control variables were found to be significant, only the age of the firm was deemed to be positively related to EPS. Based on the findings, the research recommends that firms should focus their managerial attention on lowering their ITP and ACP while increasing their APP, as results indicate that management of these elements of working capital can translate into liquidity and higher profitability.

Board features and financial performance of Nigerian banks

Abubakar Biu Aliyu · Onipe Adabenege Yahaya · Nma Ahmed Mohammed

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2021

Read abstract

The presence of contradictory theories and unpredictable empirics calls for this paper to survey the outcome of board traits on financial operation of Nigeria banks. Financial performance of a firm is as important as the firm. Yet, very few studies have examined its impact by the board of directors in Nigeria. Data were obtained and perused using descriptive and inferential figures. Findings show that size of board has significant and constructive bearing on business piece. However, board composition takes undesirable significance. Meetings of board and gender failed to show significance. But, board member nationality and firm size show negative and significant effects. We added by exploring impacts of boards on financial performance. We asked firms to increase the size of the board and engage more independent directors and reduce the number of board diligence and size of the firm. The strong plus impact of board size and firm size on financial operations is an interesting result allowing for additional interrogation of why these behaviours.

Udeme Archibong · Umar Abbas Ibrahim

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

This article assessed the impact of change management on employee performance with evidence from Nile University of Nigeria. This study made use of a descriptive survey research design. Burke Litwin model of organizational change was adopted for this study because the model explains the linkages between variables and individual and organizational performance. The population consists of 1,400 staff (Academic and Non-Academic) staff of Nile University of Nigeria Abuja. Stratified random sampling techniques were employed to select the sample size of 311 from the population. Regression analysis was used to analyze the data that was collected using a five-point likert scale structured questionnaire. The results showed that Change in organizational structure has a significance on the quality of employee service delivery in Nile University of Nigeria, there is a relationship between technological change and quality of employee service delivery in Nile University of Nigeria even though the relationship was not very strong. Leadership change significantly influences the quality of employee service delivery at Nile University of Nigeria. Human resource is an important internal strength of every organization and a source of competitive advantage, the study, therefore, recommended amongst others that organizations should communicate details of the change to the employees to minimize resistance.

The analysis of drivers of operational risks in Nigerian commercial banks

Olajide Solomon Fadun · Diekolola Oye

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2021

Read abstract

Despite the institutionalization of operational risk management in banks and the strict supervision of bank regulators, operational risk events are still on the increase. It is becoming evident to banks that there is a need to identify the drivers of this risk and nib it at the root to reduce the probability of recurrence. Hence, this study examined the drivers of operational risks in Nigerian commercial banks and the extent to which each driver contributes to operational risk. To achieve the study’s objectives, primary data were collected from the Operational Risk Management Desks of six (6) sampled commercial banks and analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The result showed that Internal processes, IT systems and Quality of Risk Officers are determinants of operational losses in banks. The internal process was however indicated as having the most impact. The study concluded that Internal Process is the major driver of operational risk in Nigerian Commercial banks. The researcher, therefore, recommends that bank management must have defined procedures for core activities and prioritize regular review of their critical processes to reduce operational risk events and the associated costs.

Time-Gap effects of crude oil prices on the foreign exchange rates: Evidence from Nigeria

Nenubari Ikue John · Emeka Nkoro · Jeremiah Anietie

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2021

Read abstract

There is a pool of techniques and methods in addressing dynamics behaviors in higher frequency data, prominent among them is the ARCH/GARCH techniques. In this paper, the various types and assumptions of the ARCH/GARCH models were tried in examining the dynamism of exchange rate and international crude oil prices in Nigeria. And it was observed that the Nigerian foreign exchange rates behaviors did not conform with the assumptions of the ARCH/GARCH models, hence this paper adopted Lag Variables Autoregressive (LVAR) techniques originally developed by Agung and Heij multiplier to examine the dynamic response of the Nigerian foreign exchange rates to crude oil prices. The Heij coefficient was used to calculate the dynamic multipliers while the Engel & Granger two-step technique was used for cointegration analysis.  The results revealed an insignificant dynamic long-term response of the exchange rate to crude oil prices within the periods under review. The coefficient of dynamism was insignificantly in most cases of the sub-periods. The paper equally revealed that the significance of the dynamic multipliers depends greatly on external information about both market indicators which are two-way interactions. Thus, the paper recommends periodic intervention in the foreign exchange market by the monetary authorities to stabilize the market against any shocks in the international crude oil market, since crude oil is the main source of foreign exchange in Nigeria.

Trade Balance and Oil Shocks in African Oil Exporting Countries

Nenubari John Ikue · Lamin Magaji · Samuel Zeb-Omoni · Mohammed, Usman

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2021

Read abstract

This paper is driven by the vast influence oil money have on the current account balance of major oil producing countries in Africa and the role policy measures could play to soften these effects. Dwelling on the nonlinear techniques, two types of Threshold Regression were used to estimate data on 8 African countries from 1995-2019. The results show evidence of nonlinear impacts of oil revenue on the current account balances of the 8 countries. The nature of the impact relies significantly on the levels of the threshold variable. Precisely, the estimated threshold benchmark for financial development was 33.34; below this threshold the sensitivity of current account balance to crude-oil shocks is higher and the probability of policy measures to mitigate the effects is low and, beyond the threshold the sensitivity of current account balance to crude-oil shocks is low and the probability of policy measure to mitigate the effects is higher. The finding suggested among others that crude-oil shocks is not the primary problem of the current account imbalance of oil-exporting countries rather the nature of the domestic economic policy environment.

Effects of challenge-based and activity-based learning approaches on technical college students’ achievement, interest and retention in woodwork technology

Chinyere Theresa Ogbuanya · Chinedu I.O Okeke · Abdullahi M Hassan

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

This study examines the effects of challenge-based and activity-based learning approaches on technical college students’ achievement, interest and retention in woodwork technology. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted. The study constituted a total number of 122 subjects, 63 for Challenge-based learning, while 59 were for activity-based learning. The study revealed that students who taught woodwork using the challenge-based learning instructional approach had a higher mean score than students taught using the activity-based learning teaching method in cognitive achievement tests, psychomotor achievement tests and tests for retention of learning.  Consequently, the research recommended that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) should consider a review of the Woodwork work curriculum for Technical Colleges with a view to incorporating the challenge-based learning instructional approach into the teaching of the woodwork.

External macroeconomic shocks and stock price behavior in Nigeria

Mojeed Olanrewaju Saliu

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

This research work investigates the relationship between external macroeconomic shocks and stock price behavior in Nigeria. Variables such as exchange rate (EXR), US real interest rate (USRINTR), and world oil price (WOP) are adopted to capture external macroeconomic shocks while all share price index is used to proxy stock price. The research work uses Johansen cointegration and structural vector autoregressive model as the estimation method. Findings from the study confirm that no long-term co-movement exists between the stock price and the selected external shocks. Findings from the study equally show that both US real interest rate (USRINTR) and world oil price (WOP) are the major external shock predictors of the stock price in Nigeria.
