Examining the cash flow statement relevance for measuring the business performance in Nigeria

Amadin Victor Idehen · Karen Akhator

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

The study examined the relevance of the statement of cash flow in the measurement of Business performance. The methodology used is a review of relevant and extant literature, First Bank share prices from 2012 -2021 after which a conclusion was made. Statement of cash flow has been a subject of debate among scholars due to some limitations in the preparation of cash flow statements. It was revealed that First Bank share prices that rose from all-time low in 2015 and 2016 to a sudden upsurge in 2018 is a reflection that the share prices did not reflect the intrinsic value of the firm. The information in the financial statement was not adequate to guide the various stakeholders. Failure of First Bank to disclose Central Bank of Nigeria forbearances, amount to material misrepresentation and led to a bubble of the share prices. The quick pick-up of the share prices after the sacked of FBN management is evidence of some investors ' belief in the bubble share prices.

Helen Ehi Eweka · Ijeoma Ugiagbe

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2020

Read abstract

This paper focuses on the phenomenon of suicide ravaging Nigerian society. It specifically espouses the causes, manifestations, and feasible panacea to the scourge of suicide in the context of students in higher education in Nigeria. It adopted the content analysis methodology whereby existing secondary data on suicide were comprehensively reviewed and major strands and themes in the data analyzed were used as the basis for the discourse in this paper. The results of the reviewed data reveal that the major causal factors of the upsurge in suicide in Nigeria are attributed to a myriad of problems bedeviling Nigerian society such as; the comatose economy, abject poverty, anomie, globalization, get-rich-syndrome, peer influence, stress, and anxiety associated with socio-economic and political realities of the Nigerian society. These systemic and personal problems negatively impact the youths especially those in the higher institutions of learning because of the rigors associated with academic pursuits in Nigeria. A feasible panacea on how to stem the tide of suicide in Nigeria was discussed at the end of the paper.

Developing capabilities for sustainability in family owned SMEs: An emerging market scenario

Ben Akume · Osarumwense Iguisi

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2020

Read abstract

The academic discourse on ‘family’ perpetuity in family-owned businesses (FOB) is still burgeoning.  Current findings suggest the importance of family control and family inter-generational sustainability in family-owned businesses. Though literature in family perpetuity and sustainability is well documented from the advanced economies, there is a scarcity of insights from emerging markets where this research relates.  The study, therefore, sought to investigate, understand and interpret the underlying drivers of sustainability in small and medium family businesses using the stewardship theory paradigm and relying on evidence from an emerging market economy the Nigerian family business environment. A qualitative method with 41 in-depth interviews involving owners and managers of family-owned small and medium businesses was conducted. The study empirically shows that there is an interrelationship between family structure and business sustainability, hence the practice of polygamy was found to be inimical to family business success and sustainability. The study also showed that the element of spirituality arising from the ideals and values of the owning family is a significant factor for ensuring family wellbeing and business sustainability, and founding owner characteristics (industry experience) and impacts positively on the business performance and continuity. The study confirmed that the stewardship of non-family member employees within the business is provisional stewardship as non-family members rely on other incentives from the owning family members to behave as stewards.  Building on the stewardship theory, the paper develops a model of sustainability for small and medium family businesses. The study contributes to the theoretical literature on stewardship and family business sustainability

Stock Returns, Inflation and the “Reverse Causality” Hypothesis

Mercy Ada Anyiwe · Sunday Osahon Igbinedion

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2015

Read abstract

This paper attempts to empirically examine the Reverse Causality hypothesis within the Nigerian context during the period 1980 – 2011. Employing Vector Error Correction Methodology (VECM), causality was found between inflation and government stocks, with causality running from government stocks to inflation, thus providing evidence in support of the reverse causality hypothesis. The results from the forecast error variance decomposition (FEVD) and impulse response functions tend to further lend credence to this finding. Accordingly, this study suggests, in part, the need for a tight monetary policy which would help to reduce inflation and stock prices, as such measures would leave the individuals with less money to buy stocks. Such efforts should be complemented by augmenting domestic production and encouraging investment through inexpensive bank finance.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Leadership Styles in Nigerian Work Organisations

Osarumwense Iguisi

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2014

Read abstract

This research project investigated four managerial leadership styles in Nigerian organizations. The research question that the research tries to address is: to what extent are the leadership styles expressed in modern management theories consistent with Nigerian Traditional values? The findings do confirm that the perceived leadership style in the organizations by the managers is autocratic, the preferred style is the paternalistic and the rejected is the autocratic. For about one in five Nigerian managers, the democratic style is the most often rejected. The study challenges the validity of dominant Western universal perspectives in managerial leadership in traditional African organizations. The study suggests that elements of traditional values pose serious challenge to Nigerian managers’ ability to adopt traditional and modern management practice that can improve the effectiveness of leadership in their organizations
