<p><em>In this study, we investigate factors affecting net interest margin (NIM) of commercial banks in Turkey. Especially, our results highlight the relation between unconventional monetary policy shocks and bank margins. To this end, first, we conduct an identification analysis about which parameters of asymmetric interest corridor framework are important in explaining variations in NIM. Using industry-level data, we show that there exists a pass through from BIST interbank overnight repo/reverse repo market rate and weighted average cost of funding (WACF) to bank loan and deposit rates. As a result of reduced-form Vector Autoregression (VAR) analysis we find the existence of a transmission mechanism from BIST rate and WACF to commercial loan rate, consumer loan rate and deposit rate. Same pass through to loan and deposit rates is also shown in individual bank level with the Panel Vector Autoregression (Panel VAR) analysis in the case of 16 commercial banks in Turkey during the period 2011Q1-2016Q1. After the identification analysis, we examine the relationship between NIM and policy rates through System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) techniques by controlling bank specific, industry related and macroeconomic factors. We find that a change in the monetary policy rate has significant and positive impact on NIM. Among bank-specific factors, equity ratio and operating expenses are found to be significantly affecting NIM during the sample period. Our empirical findings also stress the significance of lag values of NIM. Estimations conducted with standardized variables indicate that economic significance of lag values and bank specific variables are larger than that of policy.</em></p>

<p>In this paper we analyse and show how price discovery process influence the volatility of stocks. Using a theoretical approach, our initial analysis revealed that stocks experience ‘normal’ volatility as the price move from one equilibrium price to another as part of the price discovery process. Our further analysis revealed that, due to the inefficiency of financial markets, stocks also experience transitionary volatility which occurs when the price transition from one equilibrium price to another. The implication of these analytical findings means that the price discovery volatility effects can only be reduced by improving the efficiency of financial markets. Thus, we recommended that the financial microstructure be designed in a manner that promotes the efficiency of financial markets. </p>

This paper examines the relationship between financial development, economic growth and energy consumption in Cote d’Ivoire over the period 1971-2011. To do so, the study first built a synthetic indicator of financial development through the principal component analysis technique (PCA) and used four energy sources such as electric power consumption, electricity production from renewable sources, electricity production from oil sources and electricity production from hydroelectric sources. Then, employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to cointegration, we find that there is a long run relationship between financial development, economic growth and energy consumption sources. Furthermore, the results of the vector error correction models (VECM) reveal unidirectional causality running from financial development to energy consumption sources, bidirectional causality between economic growth and energy consumption and unidirectional causality from financial development to economic growth in the long run. The mixed results are due to the use of different proxies for energy consumption. Accordingly, this paper recommends that policy makers should solicit the support of financial sector in order to solve energy problems and further the diversification of the energy consumption sources since financial development has a positive effect on energy consumption in long run. Moreover, government should develop public-private partnership (PPP) to stimulate economic growth, improve the access to energy and maintain a sustainable development in Cote d’Ivoire.

<p>This study grants empirical support to the fact that profitability of the Pakistani banking sector was reduced during 2008-2009 and among other factors this reduction was attributed to the global financial crisis and resulting increased investments portfolio in total assets. We have used panel data of all Pakistani scheduled banks during 2005-2012. We proved theoretically and empirically that fixed effects model is appropriate for this study. <em>Second </em>stage analysis confirms the above results and shows that the profitability of Pakistani banking sector was higher in pre and post crisis years than, in financial crisis period. Profitability was relatively lower in the after crisis years then in before crisis years because of the residual effects of the global financial crisis. In <em>third stage</em> analysis we found that private and foreign banks were more affected by financial crisis than public sector, specialized and Islamic banks. Our results are robust to alternate measures of profitability. In context of developing countries this study will help bank managers and the regulators to stay better prepared to face any financial crisis in future. </p>

<p>The key to long-term success in banking is consistent improvement and delivering of quality product and or value-added service that conform to the expectations of customers. IT-innovative products/services and processes (technological innovation) facilitate these key elements of customer satisfaction and critical factors for retaining valued customers. The objective of this paper is to explore the effects of technological innovation on service consistency and the consequential effects on customer satisfaction and loyalty covering seven universal banks in Ghana. The results of the empirically tested model reveal new/improved product/process functionalities, service consistency and innovative product/process satisfaction contribute significantly to customer loyalty (<em>p &lt; 0.001</em>). Service consistency has a marginal higher impact (<em>β </em>= .373) on customer loyalty than the others. Product/process quality contributes significantly (with <em>β</em> ranging from .345 to .742 and <em>p &lt; 0.001</em>) to each of the above three antecedents than all other items.</p>

<p>Operational risk threatens banks financial viability and long-term sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of operational risk on financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya. The qualitative research design and ordered logistic model were employed. The data was analysed with the aid of STATA software. The conclusion of the study was that there exists an inverse relationship between operational risk and financial performance. The study also finds that bank size moderates the effect internal and external fraud on financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya by shrinking it. Bank size moderates the effect execution, delivery and process management on financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya by enhancing it. The guidelines and procedures provided by the Central bank of Kenya on operational risk management should be fully adhered into.</p>

Economic performance of countries is closely related to corporate governance systems of companies. For this reason, economic developments are affected by a positive or negative relationship according to the system’s practices. The companies which have weak corporate governance principles can cause narrow operation in capital markets of countries. At the end of this situation, the country’s economy is influenced adversely. If enterprises have a strong governance, the companies will provide more accurate investments with external and internal financial resources. Following this, it helps to achieve more efficient economic operation for both stakeholders and management staff. As a result of that, capital market operations occur in more comprehensive and more powerful manner and the country’s economy is affected positively. In this context, article tells the importance of corporate governance in financial communication while mentioning the kinds of implementing in developing and developed countries and it investigates the increased effect on global competition.

The objective of this paper is to analyse the significance of a change in dividend payment frequency. We initially argue that a change in dividend payment frequency is significant and relevant in the same manner as a change in dividend policy. We analyse the subject using an event study of Sechaba Holdings, a firm listed on the Botswana Exchange` that decided to change its dividend payment frequency from quarterly to bi-annual payment to examine the subject. We specifically used an event study methodology that analyses the significance of abnormal returns that occurred during the event period. The study revealed that the firm’s decision to change its dividend payment frequency did not significantly affect abnormal returns during the event period. The study therefore contradicted our initial argument that a change in dividend payment frequency is significant and relevant.

This study aimed to examine the influence of the financial statements on local revenue by using the results of the examination opinion as moderating variable. The study used Legitimacy Theory to explain and analyze the relationship between variables. The population in the study was all the districts and cities in Indonesia totaling 497 county and city governments. The sampling method used in the study was judgment sampling. Samples that met the criteria of the study were 116 local governments. The analytical tool used in this research was the analysis of MRA (Moderated Regression Analysis). The results showed that the effects of the partial test of the quality of financial reports to local revenues were not significant positive effects. While the partial test results stating the influence of audit opinion on local revenue having positive effects were not significant. Other results showed that the interaction between the results of the examination opinion to the quality of financial statements was insignificant on the quality of financial statements. In other words, the results of the examination opinions moderated (strengthened) the relationship between quality of financial report on local revenue of district and city governments in Indonesia.

This study aims to investigate the relation between Islamic securitization representing in Sukuk, and the Islamic banks ‘liquidities in light of Basel 3 requirements. So that the study investigates three variables which include Islamic securitization as independent variable; net cash from financing activities and net noncore funding dependence ratio as dependent variables. The study follows quantitative method by employing cross sectional data context analysis. The data is collected from six banks over six countries through the period 2011-2013. Pearson regression is used to measure causal relation between Sukuk and Net Stable Fund Ratio (NSFR), hence the model is developed to describe the relation. The study uses net noncore funding dependence ratio as (NSFR) which was required by Basel III. The regression result finds that there is positive relation between Sukuk and NSFR for Islamic banks. Also the study uses loans / deposits ratio to discover the relation between Sukuk and Islamic banks ‘liquidity risk, so the regression test shows that there is positive relation between Sukuk and loans / deposit ratio.

This study examines the influence of liquidity on the profitability of Iraqi commercial banks. Five banks based in Iraq namely: North bank, Iraqi Islamic bank, Sumer bank, Dar Es-Salam bank and Babylon bank randomly selected and analyzed for the current study over the period 2005 to 2013. Moreover, annual reports of these banks have studied and the main ratios of profitability and liquidity were calculated. These reports are available at Iraqi Stock Exchange site. The variables that were identified as independent for liquidity were, loan deposit ratio, deposit asset ratio and cash deposit ratio, while return on assets as dependent variable for profitability. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) model used to examine the impact of liquidity on profitability. The study observes that any increase in liquidity ratios as above mentioned will lead return on asset to increase as well. Depending on this study it could be better for Iraqi banks to keep a balance between liquidity and profitability.

Using the stock index data of financial sector spanned from January 2, 2009 to December 31, 2014, this study examines the effects of some policies on stock returns and volatility in Vietnamese stock market. The empirical results of EGARCH model reveal that two policies, namely, M&A and VAMC have an significantly positive impact on stock returns but they do not represent any effects on stock volatility. The third policy, regulatory reform, does not show any affection on stock return but it has an impact on the stock volatility. It implies that investors should adjust and alter their portfolio accordingly when changing policies. Besides, policymaker needs to know when they should prioritize which policy to be issued because some policies sometimes can hurt the stock market if the stock market is efficient.

This study aims to determine the influencing factors of the banks to join corporate social responsibility activities. Within this scope, annual data of 23 deposit banks in Turkey for the periods between 2005 and 2015 was taken into the consideration. In addition to this situation, panel probit model was used in the analysis so as to achieve this objective. According to the results of the analysis, it was determined that there is a negative relationship between CSR activities and nonperforming loans ratio. This situation shows that banks do not prefer to make social responsibility activities in case of higher financial losses. In addition to this situation, it was also identified that there is a positive relationship between return on asset and corporate social responsibility activities of the banks. In other words, it can be understood that Turkish deposit banks, which have higher profitability, joint more CSR activities in comparison with others.

<p>The Turkish government set a policy to become a regional financial center in 2007. This policy involved encouraging international banks to enter Turkey and take a more prominent role in the Turkish banking industry. Since then the progress has been slow to achieve this policy objective. The primary indicator of being a financial center is to have the presence of international banks. Even though there are many representative offices in Turkey, few of them changed their status to subsidiary or branch to this day. On the contrary, some international banks announced that they would downsize their operations. Representative offices have lower investment and compliance cost than that of branches and subsidiaries. Banking regulations in Turkey does not differentiate much by type, operations and size. Also international banks have to comply their head office rules in line with regulators in their home countries. In this article, we focus on the regulatory compliance costs on international banks to open branches and to establish subsidiaries with niche market strategy in Turkey. We argue that regulatory compliance costs play a major role on the reluctance of international banks’ lack of enthusiasm.</p>

The study examines the bank-specific and macroeconomic determinants of banks profitability in Nigeria analyzing audited financial reports of selected sixteen (16) commercial banks over the period of 2010 to 2015 making up to 96 observations. The study identified that existing studies are sketchy in developing economies even though many studies have emerge in developed economies. The bank profitability is measured by return on assets and return on equity as function of bank-specific and macroeconomic determinants. Using the balanced panel data set, the empirical results of the study shows that capital adequacy and liquidity have a positive and significant effect on bank profitability. However, efficiency ratio have a negative and significant effect on bank profitability. With regards to macroeconomic variable, GDP growth also have a positive and significant impact on banks profitability. The empirical results of the study suggested that banks can improve their profitability through increasing capital and liquidity, decreasing operating cost with conscious effort to maintain transparency in their operations. In addition, a good economic environment for financial institutions foster increase in bank profitability. Hence, the study recommends that further studies can expand the scope while extending to other industries as well.

<p>There is a long discussion among academics and central bankers about the theories of money supply. According to the exogenous view, central banks have the full control over money supply via policy actions including the adjustments of interest rates and reserve ratios, both of which alter commercial banks’ lending decisions. However, the theory of endogenous money supply emphasizes the role of demand for bank loans in money creation. More specifically, banks create money by meeting the demand of economic agents. In this study, we investigate which of the money supply theories holds in Turkish economy for the period 2006-2015 by employing cointegration and causality tests. Our findings show that the causality runs from bank loans to money supply both in the short and long terms, which supports the endogenous view in a sense that central bank and the banks fully meet the total demand for money in Turkish economy.</p>
