Identify performance, information on the factors that affect the performance of Islamic banking in Indonesia is needed. Several aspects that are considered to affect Islamic banking performance that management must consider are capital, liquidity aspects, credit risk, and efficiency. This research examines the influence of the aspects of capital (Capital Adequacy Ratio and Third Party Funds), liquidity (Finance to Debt Ratio ), credit risk (Non-Performing Financing).) and operational efficiency (BOPO) on the performance of Islamic banking in Indonesia 5 (five) years before the Covid pandemic occurred in Indonesia (2015-2019). The results showed that these five aspects had a simultaneous effect on Islamic banking performance in Indonesia, with a termination coefficient of 94.4%. Of the five variables, CAR, FDR, NPF, and BOPO significantly affect performance, while TPF has no significant effect on performance (Return on Assets).

Read abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out what is meant by donated land, how is the existence of the waqf land and how to study the law of the waqf land and how to optimize the management of the donated land in Indonesia. The object of this research is related to the understanding and meaning of the donated land by the Muslim community in general and especially the Muslim community in Indonesia, which is the majority population. This study uses a literature study research approach, theoretical studies using descriptive analysis methods. The results show that the revitalization of the management of waqf land in Indonesia is a very important and urgent agenda at this time. This can be done through the waqf land certification program based on information and communication technology, making an agreement on wakaf fiqh related to the productivity of the waqf land, implementing modern concepts of waqf land management based on Islamic legal principles, and supported by reliable and professional human resources of waqf institutions. is a challenge and an opportunity for Indonesia to make a big leap as the center of waqf in the world. A strong factor to support this goal is the relatively large availability and the existence of waqf land, the majority of Indonesia's population is Muslim, and the laws and regulations related to land and waqf land tend to be sufficient enough so that collaboration is needed. that is more integrated among the waqf land stakeholders in Indonesia

Analysis of Comparative Efficiencies of Islamic Banks Across Nine South and Southeast Asian Countries.

Abdus Samad

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2021

Read abstract

The purpose of this paper is two folds: (i) obtain the overall technical efficiencies (TE), pure technical efficiencies (PTE), and scale efficiencies of the Islamic bank of the nine South and Southeast Asian (SSEA) countries during 2011-2016. (ii) compare them among the Islamic banks of the SSEA. The paper applied the Bootstrap Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) for obtaining three efficiencies in the production of loan and earning assets and found that the average TE, PTE, and SE of the Islamic banks in the region were 77.3 percent, 81.2 percent, and 95.3 percent respectively. The comparison of PTE efficiencies across the Islamic banks found: (i) the average TE of the Islamic banks of Malaysia was 81.9 percent and was higher than the average of other countries in the region; (ii) the average managerial efficiency (PTE) of the Islamic banks of Malaysia, excluding Brunei, Singapore, and Thailand, was 87.0 percent and was higher than the average of other countries in the region; (iii) among countries of the South and Southeast Asia, excluding Singapore and Maldives, the Islamic banks of Pakistan were more scale efficient than other countries in the region. The average scale efficiency of Pakistan’s Islamic banks was 96.8 percent. The underlying reason for the Islamic banks of Malaysia and Pakistan most efficient in the region is because they were the forerunners. They were the first countries to introduce Islamic banks. Secondly, the banks of counties survived through competition with conventional banks operating side by side in the Islamic banks. The policy prescription suggests that bank regulators allow the opening of more Islamic banks to compete with conventional banks for improving PTE efficiency.

The objectives of interest-free financing: An evaluation on the main texts

Selman Duran

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2020

Read abstract

In contemporary global liberal economic systems, interest is recognized as an essential and indispensable tool. Ontologically speaking, there is no imperative to eliminate interest from within the system, although debates may arise concerning its rates. The notion that interest in history is considered a need beyond the norm is almost unheard of. Muslim societies integrated into the global economic system have adopted practices to normalize the use of interest, despite acknowledging that it conflicts with their beliefs. However, these efforts have not been successful in reducing interest rates or providing interest-free options to Islamic individuals and institutions. Although the compatibility of interest-free financial institutions and instruments developed under the liberal economic system and Islamic law requires further research, these entities are alleviating the root causes of interest rate restrictions. This study addresses the specific reasons behind the prohibition of interest and explores ways to eliminate these issues while remaining within the system. Using the document analysis method, which is commonly used in qualitative research for methodological purposes, this study will examine basic works in the field and provide evaluations.

The role of consumer innovativeness in consumer desire to try the transactions with sharia banking

Wahyuniati Hamid · La Ode Anto · Nasrul Nasrul

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2020

Read abstract

The study attempts to shed light on factors driving people to turn to sharia banks. The study focuses on consumer innovativeness with alternative capacity and value attractiveness as antecedents. The respondents are sharia banking consumers in Makassar. The sample size follows Malhotra 2007 formula. Respondents are reached through on-line interaction and offline contact on the spot of sharia banks. It applies the PLS tool for data analysis. It conceives that alternative seeking and innovativeness have significant effects on consumer innovativeness and desire to try the transactions with sharia banking, and consumer innovativeness has a significant effect on the desire to try the transactions with sharia banks. In this way, it explores the mediating role of consumer innovativeness in the relationship between alternative capacity and desire and that between value attractiveness and desire. Thus, the study has several novelties. It brings up new constructs such as alternative capacity, value attractiveness, and desire to try the transactions with sharia banking. The results would be that consumer innovativeness serves as a partial mediator in the relationship between alternative capacity and the desire, and a full mediator in that between value attractiveness and the desire.

Impact of Islamic Securitization (Sukuk) on Islamic Banks Liquidity Risk in Light of Basel III Requirements

Bakhita Hamdow Gad Elkreem

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2017

Read abstract

This study aims to investigate the relation between Islamic securitization representing in Sukuk, and the Islamic banks ‘liquidities in light of Basel 3 requirements. So that the study investigates three variables which include Islamic securitization as independent variable; net cash from financing activities and net noncore funding dependence ratio as dependent variables. The study follows quantitative method by employing cross sectional data context analysis. The data is collected from six banks over six countries through the period 2011-2013. Pearson regression is used to measure causal relation between Sukuk and Net Stable Fund Ratio (NSFR), hence the model is developed to describe the relation. The study uses net noncore funding dependence ratio as (NSFR) which was required by Basel III. The regression result finds that there is positive relation between Sukuk and NSFR for Islamic banks. Also the study uses loans / deposits ratio to discover the relation between Sukuk and Islamic banks ‘liquidity risk, so the regression test shows that there is positive relation between Sukuk and loans / deposit ratio.

Read abstract

Interest income is considered as forbidden in Islam. Therefore, in Turkey, conservatives generally don’t prefer general banking and by this way funds can’t be used in economic system. So saving deficit can’t be solved in country and saving of people depreciates against inflation. Participation banks which work according to Islamic rules are set up to bring these funds to economy. Participation banking operates in more than 60 countries today and conservatives generally prefer to work with because they are working to principles of profit instead of interest. To attract and persuade more people, at first participation banks should satisfy their customers. In our study we aim to measure customer satisfaction in participation banks in Kastamonu and to reveal the differences between demographic groups. To this aim we conducted a questionnaire to customers of participation banks in Kastamonu.

An Empirical Study on Corporate Governance and Islamic Bank Performance

Sarwar Uddin Ahmed · Wali Ullah · Samiul Parvez Ahmed · Ashikur Rahman

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2016

Read abstract

Corporate governance refers to the relationship present between the corporation and the stakeholders that determines and controls the strategic direction and performance of the corporation. Good corporate governance should provide adequate incentives for the board and management to pursue objectives that are in the interests of the company and shareholders, thereby encouraging firms to use resources more efficiently. However, the definition of accountability differs between conventional and Islamic Banks. Islam was made accountable not only to stakeholders, but also to Allah, the ultimate owner and authority. These powerful moral ethics help in promoting fair, just and honest business dealing. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between corporate governance structures and the resultant financial performance of listed Islamic banks of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) in Bangladesh. The panel time series data were collected for the time period of 6 years (2009-2014) from all the listed Islamic banks to run an Ordinary Least Squared (OLS) regression model to examine whether the existing corporate governance mechanisms as well as several other internal and external indicators are significant in influencing the financial performance. Preliminary findings suggest corporate governance mechanisms in Islamic banks are not quite as strong as they should be, hinting at possible market and management inefficiencies.

The Influence of Oil Prices on Islamic Banking Efficiency Scores during the Financial Crisis: Evidence from the MENA Area

Ali Said

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2016

Read abstract

The present paper measured the influence of the oil prices on the Islamic banking efficiencies scores during the financial crisis of 2008-2009. The study showed that there is no a direct relationship between the oil prices and the efficiencies scores of Islamic banks in the MENA area. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that Islamic banks in the GCC area showed a higher mean in pure technical efficiency compared to Islamic banks in the North African and other MENA. Islamic banks in other MENA countries and North Africa considered to be technically inefficient. The inefficiencies were due to the underdeveloped banking system and the lack of experiences in those countries to allocate resources between the bank inputs and outputs.

We have used monthly data during the period of 2009-2013. The findings of the study showed that, there is no statistically significant difference between the monthly average lending rates of Islamic banks and conventional banks. However, there is significant difference between deposit rates. The existence of causal relationship was inconclusive, and requires further analysis.

Read abstract

The positive of impact of market orientation toward business performance of a company is a common wisdom in the marketing literatures. Hence the prior studies recommend that the connection will depend on other strategic actions. In this regards, this study tries to assess the construct of business ethics as the precedent of market orientation in the context of Indonesia Islamic banks. Upon assessing data using SmartPLS, this study finds that market orientation is the determinant of business performance and Islamic business ethics is the precedent of market orientation. However, market orientation is not effective as the mediator in the relationship between Islamic business ethics and business performance. The discussion of this finding is provided as well as the managerial implication at the end of this paper.
