The influence of brand equity on purchase intention toward hand-shaken beverages

Han-Yee Leong · Ren-Fang Chao

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

Hand-shaken beverages represent a unique business model in Taiwan. This study explores the impact of four dimensions of brand equity on consumers' word-of-mouth and purchase intention regarding hand-shaken beverages. A survey was conducted among hand-shaken beverage consumers. A total of 352 valid questionnaires were recovered, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results showed that consumers' perceptions of brand awareness, quality, and brand association affected word-of-mouth. These dimensions had an indirect impact on purchase intention through word-of-mouth, suggesting that when consumers develop an attachment to a brand, they engage in positive behaviors concerning the brand. However, due to the high homogeneity and lack of distinctiveness of Taiwanese hand-shaken beverage products, they fail to attract consumer loyalty.

Influencing Generation Y students’ clothing brand awareness: A gender perspective

Heleneze-Tiané Lues

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic significantly affected the global fashion industry, causing several changes that intensified competition between fashion retailers and brands, making it more challenging to establish or increase clothing brand awareness. Gender plays a crucial role in consumers’ perceptions and decision-making, highlighting the importance of understanding the role of gender in effectively establishing and increasing clothing brand awareness. The objective of the study was to determine whether differences exist in the creation of clothing brand awareness of Generation Y male and female students. This study followed a descriptive research design. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to students for voluntary completion. A total of 625 completed questionnaires were analysed by performing frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, internal consistency reliability, correlation analysis and regression analysis. After establishing the reliability of the measurement instrument, and confirming significant statistical relationships between all the constructs, multiple linear regression analysis was performed. The findings of the regression analysis revealed that for Generation Y male students, product, store image and advertising of clothing brands significantly influence their awareness of a brand; while for Generation Y female students, the price and advertising of clothing brands significantly influence their awareness of clothing brands. This study contributes to the literature relating to gender studies and brand awareness, and provides practical recommendations for clothing brands and retailers to more effectively establish or strengthen clothing brand awareness among Generation Y male and female consumers, respectively.

The Influence of perceived value and brand image on Lacoco's brand equity with brand awareness as a moderation variable

Yunus Indra Purnama · Nur Wening

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2023

Read abstract

In the current era, skin and facial health is the main thing that is a concern, especially for women. Appearance has an important role in encouraging one's confidence. The supporting role of one's appearance is the use of skincare. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of perceived value, brand image, and brand awareness on Lacoco brand equity in Surabaya. The sample in this study used accidental sampling of 100 respondents. The data collection method uses observation and questionnaires. The data processing technique used is a test of validity and reliability. Data analysis techniques include multiple linear regression tests, determination coefficient tests, and t-tests. From the results of the research hypothesis test, it was obtained that the variables of perceived value, brand image and brand awareness had a significant positive effect on Lococo brand equity where perceived value was formed due to customers' subjective assessment of the product and the benefits received by buying the product, brand image an effective one should meet the criteria of maker image, user image and product image to achieve the goals it sets, and consumers willing to buy a brand depend on consumer awareness and knowledge about the brand. In the moderation variable, brand awareness weakens the influence of brand image on brand equity, this is because the influence of perceived value on brand equity is an important aspect in understanding how the perceived value of consumers to a product or brand can impact overall brand value. When consumers have a high level of awareness about the brand and maintain a positive image of the brand, the value of the brand will increase.

The commercialisation of childhood? Materialism values of South African tweens

Belinda Senooane

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2023

Read abstract

The development of the child consumer market has often been criticised as the commercialisation of childhood. Marketers have been accused of targeting children and grooming them for a lifetime of consumerism. The maelstrom of marketing activities aimed directly at children has led to their being more active than ever in the consumer culture space. An unfortunate consequence of this has been children becoming materialistic because of the commercial pressures of modern childhood. This study sought to determine whether South African tweens are materialistic. Existing studies on child materialism have largely excluded African children, hence the need for the current study. Data were collected through a survey of 192 schoolchildren, aged 10-14 (tween cohort), using an adapted short material values scale (MVS-c). The results of the study revealed that while South African tweens are active in consumer culture, they are largely not materialistic. This research furthers the academic inquiry into children as consumers and active participants within consumer culture. It also addresses the paucity of research on African children within the consumer culture space. The results of the study have implications for marketers with regard to responsible marketing to child consumers, as well as for researchers with regard to acknowledging African children as a non-negotiable part of the study of consumption. The study also provides recommendations for further research on child consumers.

Read abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of two functional brand qualities, innovativeness, and quality, on the perceived value of the consumers, through the mediating role of two symbolic brand qualities, namely brand experience and brand personality. This research is quantitative by using a purposive sampling technique on a population of undergraduate students from all Universities in Indonesia. The number samples were 200 respondents who are the consumers of Indonesian local brand beauty product “Somethinc”, which was taken through an online questionnaire. The data analysis technique used to test the hypotheses in this study is Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method by relying on the AMOS program (IBM SPSS AMOS version 24.0). The main findings of the study demonstrate that there is a positive and significant influence of brand innovativeness on brand personality, perceived quality on brand experience, perceived quality on brand personality, perceived quality on perceived value, brand experience to perceived value, and brand personality to perceived value. From the proposed model, there are two hypotheses that are not accepted, including the relationship between brand innovativeness with brand experience and brand innovativeness with perceived value. Based on the research results, the rejected hypothesis can occur due to the differences in how individuals perceive the benefits of innovation provided by the company. This study also demonstrates that there is a positive role of two symbolic brand qualities in mediating the relationship between brand innovativeness and perceived quality on consumer perceived value.

Read abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the nexus between brand consciousness and psychological antecedents of consumer decision-making styles of Generation Y consumers in Botswana. Brand Consciousness refers to the degree to which people use brand names to make purchase decisions. The study employed quantitative and causal research. E-questionnaire was employed to collect data from 400 generation Y consumers, of which 320 were successfully selected and tested through purposeful sampling. The study results revealed that there is a positive relationship between brand consciousness and psychological antecedents of consumer decision-making styles and also the research findings indicated that millennial consumers in Botswana identify themselves as independent decision-makers that do not rely on external influence when making their purchasing decisions. The study results also indicated that most Batswana millennials are more cognitive innovators than sensory innovators. It is recommended that retailers must be encouraged to add excitement to shopping amenities to attract and retain millennial sensory innovators. Tangible evidence on future research is also required on the actual effects of modern smart e-shopping on generational transformation from Gen X, and Y to Z.

Brand personality and student consumerism towards higher education in Indonesia

Johnny Hadi Raharjo · G. Oka Warmana · Damar Kristianto

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2022

Read abstract

Modern society today relies on the ideology of consumption, not just a marker of the social status of a person or group but a mechanism used by consumers to gain social status or prestige by buying or consuming goods considered high by customers. The increasing reach of consumerism ideology has expanded the traditional definition of a "commodity" into an intangible service, especially in universities' operations. Surveys show that students tend to act as consumers in university education. Consumerism correlates with brand personality. There is a fine line that universities must build and maintain that will enable academics within universities to express integrity and intellectual qualities in both their teaching and research. This expression should include students as participants and recipients not only when they are involved in the class but as participants and recipients in the community in which the University is located.

Read abstract

The aim of the study is to explore the impact of brand awareness, brand loyalty and brand attitude on purchase intention in online shopping. The study was quantitative in nature adopting the survey method. Due to the absence of a sampling frame, convenience sampling, a form of non-probability sampling was utilised a total of 253 responses well collected from Braamfontein, a busy business district in Johannesburg, South Africa. In order to test the proposed hypotheses, a unique conceptual model was developed in which brand awareness, brand loyalty, and brand attitude acted as predictors while purchase intention served as the outcome. Data analysis was conducted in SPSS 27 where descriptive statistics were produced as well as regression analysis to test the proposed hypothesis. Findings suggested that customers perceived brand attitude to have the strongest impact on purchase intention while the weakest predictor of purchase intention was brand awareness as far as online purchasing was concerned. Managerial implications emerged from the study and suggestions for further research were proposed.

Investigating the consumer evaluation of the co-branding of luxury brands

Xi Chen · Zhe Li

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2022

Read abstract

China as a hot luxury market has witnessed high growth in luxury sales despite the COVID-19. In recent years, many luxury companies have further improved their brand value and influence via co-branding strategies, however, their brand cooperation received mixed evaluations. Drawing on the conceptual blending theory and self-concept consistency theory, this paper constructs and verifies the structural equation model of consumer evaluation of luxury co-branding from the perspectives of the brands and the consumers. The study reveals that luxury co-branding fit, advertising types and the consumers’ life-role transition have a positive impact on consumer evaluation. Both the type of advertising and consumers’ life-role transition have a moderating effect on consumer evaluation. Specifically, (i) In luxury co-branding, the co-branded products paired with a high fit between the values of the cooperative brands are more likely to receive high consumer evaluation; (ii) The publicity of the brand image of the co-branded products has a stronger moderating effect on the perceived quality, appeal and purchase intention of luxury users than the publicity of the features of the co-branded products; (iii) For luxury brands with a high degree of joint fit, consumers who have not experienced life-role transformation have a stronger regulatory effect on consumers' perceived quality, attractiveness and purchase intention than consumers who have experienced life-role transformation.

K Mercy Makhitha

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

The paper determines the black consumers’ perceptions towards luxury brands in South Africa. The purchase of luxury brands has been on the rise locally and internationally. Global brands have been investing in SA by expanding to the region. The demand for luxury brands has also increased over the past decades. In SA, the middle-class group has also increased, particularly the black middle class which increased the market for luxury brands. To achieve the objectives of the study, a survey was conducted among black consumers in Thohoyandou, Venda, South Africa. Data were collected by two fieldworkers who intercepted shoppers visiting a regional mall in the area. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25. The descriptives, factor analysis, and ANOVA were analyzed to achieve the objectives of the study.  The findings of the study reveal that black consumers are more influenced by the rarity and uniqueness of the brands followed by the financial and functional values of the brands. Black consumers’ perceptions towards luxury brands were found to differ across age and income groups but did not differ across gender and education levels. Organizations targeting black consumers must design brands that are rare and unique and ensure that brands deliver the financial and functional values desired by black consumers

Investigating the moderating role of intercultural factors on consumer cross-shopping behavior

Hayiel Hino

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2020

Read abstract

The concept of prejudice has become increasingly important to scientific thinking about relations between groups. Yet, despite extensive research, little is known about how prejudice affects consumer buying behavior, especially regarding activities that involve purchasing products and services thereby crossing to suppliers from the dominant community.  The purpose of this study is twofold: to examine the influence of both positive and negative prejudices on cross-shopping intention in the context of an ethnic minority-majority group relationship; and, to investigate the moderating influence of intercultural-related factors (i.e. online contact, social interaction, and acculturation) on the relationship between negative prejudice and cross-shopping intention. A sample consisting of 202 respondents was obtained from across ethnic-minority consumers (the Israeli Arabs) who routinely interact online and offline with individuals from the majority population (Israeli Jews). The conceptual framework and hypothesis are tested using the partial least squares analyses (PLS). The study results provide a better understanding of the conflicting effects of positive and negative prejudice on cross-shopping intention. Additionally, results shed light on the moderating role of intercultural factors on the relationship between negative prejudice and cross-shopping intention. Implications are identified together with consideration of the study limitations and avenues for future research.

Questioning the Link between Self-Expressed Attitudes and Repurchasing Behavior

Guven Ordun

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

In psychology attitude is defined as favorable or unfavorable evaluations towards a person, group, object or event. Attitudes are formed by past and present experiences and are expected to change as a function of experience. Three components of the attitude defined as cognitive (what we know about the subject), affective (how we feel towards the subject) and behavioral (intention to behave towards the subject). Our behavior is defined as a complex combination of beliefs, feelings, capabilities and norms. The majority of consumer behavior literature examined the main antecedents of purchase behavior. Attitudes are described as one of the most important determinant of the behavior. There are several methods and techniques to assess attitude; the most used one is the self-report paper and pencil measures. Brand loyalty is another important concept related with repetitive purchasing behavior. While cognitive loyalty is related with the information, affective loyalty is related with feelings. Behavioral loyalty is described as the past behaviors or experiences. Some of our behaviors are determined by the cognitive component of the attitude while others may be directed by the affective part. Main focus of the research is to find out whether there is a level of compliance between cognitive, affective and behavioral attitude of consumers. 1000 forms are distributed in order to identify the attitudes and purchasing behaviors of consumers 783 forms are evaluated
