Risk management of Islamic microfinance institutions: unique practices at crucial risks

Sholeh Wafi · Helmi Muhammad

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2023

Read abstract

The objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of risk management and control practices at BMT UGT Nusantara, an Islamic microfinance institution in Indonesia, with a particular emphasis on financing risk, liquidity risk, and Sharia compliance risk. These three risks are said to occur frequently and have a direct impact on performance. Because of the uniqueness of the site, the design of this qualitative research is descriptive and exploratory with a holistic single-case approach. In-depth interviews, field observations, focus group discussions, and a review of supporting documents were used to collect data. Because the interactive cycle process includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and data withdrawal, data analysis employs an interactive model. The data was validated using the criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The study's findings show that BMT UGT Nusantara, an Islamic microfinance institution in Indonesia, employs traditional-partial risk management on financing risk, liquidity risk, and Sharia compliance risk. Risk management is carried out by integrating "macul bumi", or outward efforts based on sincerity, and "macul langit", or spiritual efforts. Furthermore, it employs information systems that play an important role in risk management in order to improve organizational performance and competitive advantage.

Comparison of Banca Etica and participation banks in Turkey within the scope of ethical banking practices in terms of business ethics

Simge Sahin · Mahmut Arslan

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2024

Read abstract

In this study, Banca Etica, which operates in Europe within the scope of ethical banking practices, and participation banks in Turkey were compared in terms of business ethics. Ethical banking is an approach based on observing social, environmental and ethical responsibilities in the provision of financial services. Banca Etica and participation banks apply these ethical principles in different ways. Banca Etica focuses on social and environmental sustainability, transparency and community participation. The bank offers its customers interest rates determined in line with ethical principles and invests in social responsibility projects. Drawing attention with its transparency and accountability policies, Banca Etica regularly reports the effects of its investments and loans and shares them with the public. Participation banks in Turkey adopt interest-free banking principles in accordance with Islamic finance principles. These banks, which serve their customers by offering profit-loss sharing models and products that comply with Islamic finance rules, focus on social responsibility projects such as social justice and helping the poor. Participation banks' transparency regarding sharia compliance assures their customers that their transactions comply with Islamic finance rules. As a result, both types of banks operate in line with ethical principles, but their implementation approaches and areas of focus differ. These differences determine customers' preferences and banks' contributions to society and the environment.

The objectives of interest-free financing: An evaluation on the main texts

Selman Duran

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2020

Read abstract

In contemporary global liberal economic systems, interest is recognized as an essential and indispensable tool. Ontologically speaking, there is no imperative to eliminate interest from within the system, although debates may arise concerning its rates. The notion that interest in history is considered a need beyond the norm is almost unheard of. Muslim societies integrated into the global economic system have adopted practices to normalize the use of interest, despite acknowledging that it conflicts with their beliefs. However, these efforts have not been successful in reducing interest rates or providing interest-free options to Islamic individuals and institutions. Although the compatibility of interest-free financial institutions and instruments developed under the liberal economic system and Islamic law requires further research, these entities are alleviating the root causes of interest rate restrictions. This study addresses the specific reasons behind the prohibition of interest and explores ways to eliminate these issues while remaining within the system. Using the document analysis method, which is commonly used in qualitative research for methodological purposes, this study will examine basic works in the field and provide evaluations.

The relationship between profit sharing ratio and zakah performance ratio on return on assets

Zulhelmy Hatta · Dodi Okri Handoko · Firdaus A. Rahman · Siska

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2024

Read abstract

The research aims to investigate and study the implementation of Sharia compliance and financial sustainability, especially at Bank Pembiayatan Rakyat Syariah (BPRS) or Sharia People's Financing Bank in Indonesia. For this reason, an empirical study is needed to determine the relationship between the Profit-Sharing Ratio and the Zakah Performance Ratio on Return on Assets in BPRS in Indonesia. The research method used is a quantitative approach using secondary data, and data analysis techniques using multiple regression. The research results show that partially the profit-sharing ratio has a significant effect on the return on assets of BPRS in Indonesia. On the other hand, the zakat performance ratio does not significantly influence the return on assets of BPRS in Indonesia. However, simultaneously or together the profit-sharing ratio and zakat profit ratio significantly affect the profitability of BPRS in Indonesia. Thus, the research is expected to provide a constructive contribution to the development of the world of science, for the government, for practitioners and others related to the implementation of Sharia compliance and financial sustainability of Sharia Financial Institutions in general, and of BPRS both globally and locally—Indonesia in particular.
