Nenubari Ikue John · Emeka Nkoro

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2019

Read abstract

The study examined the dynamic responses of profitability indexes to capital adequacy ratios of authorized internationalized deposit money banks in Nigeria. The data were sourced from the financial year books of the deposit money banks and analyzed with static and dynamic panel estimators. The static estimator shows that the banks have differences in managerial style, size and profitability. Also, it was revealed that return on asset and return on equity responded positively to asset size, efficiency of the use of asset and current ratio in the static models and they were highly significant. However, they were insignificant in the dynamic specifications except asset size that was significant in the return on asset model showing a weak dynamic response of profitability to capital adequacy ratios. Hence the study recommended that Banks should improve their share based as to increase the asset as this will improve profitability.

Tax revenue and private domestic investment: Evidence from Nigeria

Richard Umeokwobi · Emeka Nkoro

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2019

Read abstract

This paper investigated the impact of tax revenue on private domestic investment in Nigeria from 1980 to 2018 using the modified ordinary least squares- Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL). The paper used oil revenue, non-oil revenue, and Corporate Income Tax (CIT) as the independent variables while Private Domestic Investment (PDI) is the dependent variable. Oil revenue and non-oil revenue were used as a proxy for oil and non-oil tax. These data were obtained from secondary sources- central Bank of Nigeria, World Bank database and Federal Inland Revenue service statistical bulletin. The result showed that a long-run relationship exists between the aforementioned variables. Also, the paper revealed that oil and non-oil do not have a significant impact on PDI but CIT has a positive and significant impact on PDI. The paper recommends that proper measures/reforms should be put in place in order to reduce the impact of tax on private domestic investment in Nigeria.

Reschiwati Reschiwati · Fran Sayekti · Faisal Arief

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2019

Read abstract

MSMEs contribute more than 60% of economic growth. 99% of business operators in Indonesia are MSMEs. However, the contribution of MSMEs in tax revenue is still low. The government has sought to improve tax compliance for the MSME sector by the existence of an Account Representative position (AR) and an online reporting system, namely E Filling. This study aims to determine whether the role of Account representative (AR) and the use of E Filling can affect the compliance of MSMEs in reporting tax. The data used are MSMEs in the area of the Primary Tax Office in Duren Sawit. The number of questionnaires distributed was 120 and could be processed was 95 questionnaires. The analytical tool used is the Structure Equation Model (SEM). The results conclude that the value of the role of AR and the use of E-Filling affect the compliance of MSMEs in reporting taxes partially and simultaneously.

Macroeconomic determinants of total factor productivity and its trend in Ethiopia

Adisu Abebaw Degu · Dagim Tadesse Bekele

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

Total factor productivity (TFP) as a source of economic growth, has been recognized in economic theory for a long period of time. In this research we tried to examine the effect of some macroeconomic factors, which include trade openness, inflation, government expenditure, credit extended and foreign direct investment, and natural disaster drought on total factor productivity and its trend in Ethiopia by using Time series data spanning from 1991 to 2018.  The TFP was computed by using the growth accounting method from Cobb–Douglas production function.  ARDL was used for estimation of the short and long run econometric model.  Accordingly, the trend analysis shows the growth in TFP has been fluctuating over the study period. The result from ARDL indicated that; in long run foreign direct investment, government expenditure and drought negatively and significantly affect TFP. Credit extended is found to affect TFP positively and significantly, while inflation and trade openness are insignificant. Therefore, policies such as; subsidizing domestic firms, effective government spending and making the agriculture sector drought resistant need to be stimulated.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

Practitioners and academics have been perplexed over the years by low efficiency and bad performance in construction projects. Several critical factors have been uncovered by previous studies which are governance mechanism, task conflict and opportunism. But an obvious question arises how the mechanism of governance in the presence of conflict can mitigate opportunism. The overarching objective of this study is therefore to create a model to study the effectiveness of these mechanisms of governance in the presence of task conflict. This paper is based on a positivist study philosophy in which a quantitative deductive method was used to collect data from 139 participants. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) through SmartPLS3.The research findings show that relational governance affects project efficiency considerably and is helpful in decreasing opportunism and conflict. In addition, there is proof that opportunistic behavior will increase the task conflict among parties but both task conflict and opportunism doesn’t have direct impact on the performance of project

Reengineering mass career acquisition through technical vocational education training counseling in Kenya

Muriu Stephen Macharia

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

Vocational and Technical Education forms a very key foundation in enabling a nation to achieve aspired MDGs and SDG. Kenya as a country highly depends on technical skills to achieve the Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals. However, this can only be achieved through proper and realistic career counseling information provided by the counseling teachers at the secondary school level. According to KCSE results released every year, the majority of the candidates score below grade C+ especially in 2016 and 2017 though above D- which is the requirement for entrance for proficiency level for TVET courses.  However, the majority of students do not join Vocational or Technical Education due to a missing link between the natures of career counseling services offered at the secondary school level. Counselors have expectations and premise that the majority of the candidates join training at university levels thus package their counseling information on the few ignoring other students.  The objective behind this study was to examine the final results scored by students and the subject choice at secondary school, various career theories, and models that guide career choices formed the foundation for the study. The study used a descriptive design where data was collected through past existing data review from KNEC and one Technical Training Institute over a period of four years. Data was analyzed and presented in tables and figures. Findings revealed that the majority of the candidates (86.92%) of the KCPE candidates scored less than C+ and had no career information on Vocational and Technical Education. The study recommends reengineering of the career guidance in Kenya education system to involve the Ministry, professionals and Human Resource Management experts.

Effect of Learning Goal Orientation on Leadership Development

Emmanuel Mango · Jeremiah Koshal · Caren Ouma

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

Effective leadership development has eluded many organizations and academia for a long time. Those who have attempted to improve the practice and study of leadership development focus on the same old elements of leadership development. The traditional elements of leadership development that have been studied and implemented previously include: the content of the leadership development programs, the delivery of leadership development programs, the length of the programs and advocating for leadership development programs that are entrenched in leadership theory. Despite numerous studies and implementation of the studies’ findings on leadership development, there exists widespread dissatisfaction with leadership development outcomes. Some scholars have observed that leader developmental readiness may be the missing ingredient in leadership development. Learning goal orientation is one of the five elements of leader developmental readiness. Therefore, this study examines the effect of learning goal orientation on leadership development. The study reveals that learning goal orientation has a significant effect on leadership development, F(1,286) = 62.346, p < 001. In addition, learning goal orientation accounts for 17.9% of the variation in leadership development. Thus, enhancing participants’ learning goal orientation should be part and parcel of any leadership development program in order to improve the effectiveness of leadership development.

Strategic management in Albanian SMEs

Andrra Qielli

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

The strategic management process gives as a product the formulated strategy which is then implemented, evaluated and controlled. This process before being crowned with these stages had a different composition. Somewhere in the mid-1960s, strategic planning emerged, which preceded strategic management. It was a good way to steer businesses through strategies. But its main weakness was that it consisted only of the strategy formulation phase, so the final product of strategic planning was the strategy. Business history is fraught with failures that are based on past successful models. So even if a firm performs well today, no one guarantees it will survive tomorrow. This study is research that aims to investigate the level of implementation of the strategic management process in Albanian enterprises. Due to the time and material constraint of doing a survey of companies in all sectors in Albania, I have been limited to companies dealing with the production of bottled water, which serves as a representative sample for the final results as well as for further research into the future.

Improving gender equality in decision-making is a very important issue in a country's economic development. The main purpose of the research is to analyze the level of central level decision making and the alignment of the labor market at Kosovo level on gender basis. Also, this paper presents a theoretical focus on the role of decision making for a better service and the possible management of gender equality counseling programs in the economic, political and social spheres. Kosovo continues to face challenges as well as a marked disparity in women's disadvantage in regards to managing the gender-based decision-making process at both the central and the local level. Although there are laws that stimulate gender equality, the position of women in decision-making in public life in terms of contributing to economic, political and social development endeavors are lacking their increase in participation and decision-making at both central and local levels.
