The Profitability of the Brazilian Banking Sector After the Entry of Financial Technology Firms

Torrecilha, Samuel Menna Barreto · Xavier Ywata de Carvalho, Alexandre · Tessmann, Mathias Schneid · Ferreira Magalhães, Luiz Augusto

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2026

Read abstract

After digital technology started spreading around economies, the hypothesis emerged that smaller but very digitally inclined firms would disrupt existing profitability levels by challenging incumbents’ market power. In this context, the banking sector would be no exception. By testing this hypothesis through a fixed effects model considering quarterly data from 2011 to 2022 for Brazilian banks, we found that from 2016 on there was a change in the behavior of intermediation revenues associated with increased competition in the sector, especially due to the performance of fintechs and digital banks. On the other hand, we observed a reversal of the slope of fee revenues, which became positive, indicating an attempt to compensate for the drop in intermediation revenues, notably an unwanted side effect. The study recommends that policymakers should watch for possible substitution effects while designing banking regulations.

Observations and Inferences About the Fixed Cost in Protective Put Strategy

Thiago Wanderley Macedo Neves de Almeida · Vinicio De Souza e Almeida

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2025

Read abstract

The Options Based Portfolio Insurance (OBPI) should avoid losses and capture gains, by the cost of a “premium”, but in practice the premium cost can be too high to capture gains in the different market conditions. Based on this premise, the objective of this study is to analyze an optimized alternative to Options Based Portfolio Insurance, assuming that the probability of an Extreme Negative Event varies with time, and therefore the insurance floor should not be maintained at any cost. To achieve the objective, data were crossed between the rollover date and a fixed insurance cost on equity, using historical data from 678,546 trades carried out in the US market, which resulted in 3,700 portfolios. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and econometric statistics with simple linear regressions. The results demonstrated that the insured floor varied with the volatility implied in option prices, indicating the possibility of obtaining better return-risk ratio and lower drawdown when compared to the unprotected portfolio, showing a positive correlation between insurance cost and return-risk ratio for low costs and a negative correlation for higher costs. Furthermore, it can be indirectly inferred that the explanation for the results comes from the perception of risk by the market not representing the real risk. As with the stabilization and possible recovery of prices that occur after a significant drop, market confidence is not restored to the same proportion. That’s why volatility remains at high levels, consequently, raising the insurance cost, even with lower probabilities of Extreme Negative Events.

Omnichannel Retailing

Marcio Kawahara Iguma · Joshua Onome Imoniana

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2023

Read abstract

This paper aims to examine the factors affecting the postadoption of RFID technology as part of omnichannel strategies in the retail industry. In addition, it evaluates how this innovation contributed to the improvement of the quality of corporate financial information. We employed an exploratory multiple-case study design based on qualitative research, by using semi-structured interviews, and public financial and sustainability reports as sources of evidence. The data collection and analysis were performed in 2022 for the pilot case of a manufacturer and the formal cases of three retailers. The results reveal that RFID postadoption is influenced by technological factors (relative advantage, observability, trialability, and perceived costs), organizational factors (top management support and firm size), and environmental factors (competitive pressure and external support). Surprisingly, loss recognition and loss provision are the most affected accounting practices, differently from what has been suggested by the accounting literature. We also found that item-level RFID enables increased frequencies of full inventory counts, providing inventory accuracy of records and real-time inventory visibility. This results in the improvement of accounting information quality in terms of relevance, faithful representation, timeliness, comparability, understandability, verifiability, and value-added. Our findings may contribute to both research and practice, as well as IS and accounting fields. We identified and investigated the phenomenon of the recent movement of RFID adoption by large retail companies listed in B3 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Finally, we provide a theoretical model based on the TOE framework integrated to a construct of accounting information quality specifically developed for the RFID postadoption context.

Effects of the ECL Model on Regulatory Capital in European Banks

Manuela Rodrigues Boscia · José Alves Dantas · Vitor Leone · Herbert Kimura

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2022

Read abstract

The paper’s purpose was to assess whether the effects on the regulatory capital of the ECL model in European banks differs among those that adopted IRB or standardized approaches to credit risk management. The empirical tests revealed that there was a significant reduction in the level of capita buffers of European banks when the IFRS 9 was first adopted, and that this reduction was more pronounced among banks using a standardized approach to credit risk than for those that relied on an IRB approach. Further testing confirmed the premise that there was an underestimation of capital requirements in the period prior to the adoption of the ECL. The study fills a gap in literature, by evaluating the difference in the impact of adopting the ECL model on the banking system, as a function of the credit risk management approach for capital purposes. The assessment of what happened in the European banking system can be used as a guidance to other jurisdictions still in transition to the ECL model.

Effects of Emotional Intelligence on the Relationship Between Individual and Contextual Factors on the Quality of Internal Auditing in Federal Educational Institutions in Brazil

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2022

Read abstract

This research investigated the effects of individual and contextual factors on the quality of internal audit moderated by emotional intelligence. The research was operationalized from a research instrument consisting of 39 questions, answered by 93 internal auditors from Federal Educational Institutions in Brazil. Descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling were applied. Results showed that individual factors positively and significantly affect the quality of the audit. The work resources, although considered important, did not influence the quality of the audit, unlike the contextual factor of time budget pressure, which affects it positively and significantly. Regarding the moderation of emotional intelligence in individual factors and contextual factors, this was not supported. Thus, concerning the originality, research on the influence of emotional intelligence on the results of the work of the internal auditor is recent in the literatures, this study therefore, boosts the ex ante sources and also support the regulating bodies and practitioners.  Finally, as a suggestion for future research, it is recommended that the studies reach the population not investigated in this study, being internal auditors from other sectors of the economy, external auditors or even auditors from the private sector.
