The impact of Covid-19 on leadership and occupational health in remote work environments

Elriza Esterhuyzen · Leonie Louw · Tshepo Mabotja

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2026

Read abstract

Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the development of remote work, this conceptual study proposes integrating OHS leadership competences into responsible leadership education. This study teaches executives how to enhance employee well-being in distributed work contexts to help achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). PRISMA was used to conduct a systematic literature review for transparency and rigour. The review used Web of Science, Scopus, and Sabinet scholarly sources. Qualitative thematic analysis with Atlas.ti identified key themes and research gaps in occupational health and safety, responsible leadership, and remote work. Leadership education and responsible leadership are linked to sustainable development and organisational sustainability. Leadership education still lacks occupational health and safety standards, especially for remote and hybrid work contexts exacerbated by the COVID-19 epidemic. Socio-economic vulnerabilities, violence, and climate change increase occupational risks and health inequities in Africa, highlighting this shortcoming. The suggested approach focusses adapting leadership education to remote work dynamics and including occupational health and safety competences. Online adult education is growing rapidly, offering a chance to adapt leadership development to Africa's socio-cultural and economic conditions. The framework helps train leaders who safeguard health, promote ethical governance, and boost worker resilience in emerging workplaces. This study introduces a new interdisciplinary paradigm that merges leadership education and occupational health, a neglected area of research. In the post-COVID-19 setting, OHS leadership is vital to responsible leadership education, filling a vacuum in scholarship and practice. The framework helps educators, legislators, and leaders create safer, fairer, and more sustainable workplaces.

Recalibration perceptions of risk management challenges within the built environment at the national road infrastructure project within eThekwini Municipality

Charles Tony Simphiwe Ngwenya · Bokang Sithole

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2025

Read abstract

The study explores contributory factors that make a fundamental contribution within the built environment pertaining to the management of the cognitive perceptions and attitude of risk with its concomitant insights, contributions and expectations. The built environment infrastructure is a fundamental component of economic prosperity as the research focuses on the construction of national roads and the associated risks, both internal and external, to primary and secondary stakeholders. The research purpose is to illuminate those factors within the risk management discipline which are critical from the prism of the employees and other indirect contracting personnel who are the main contributors within the high-risk environment of the built environment. The study employed the interpretivist philosophy, which is synonymous with the inductive approach of the qualitative methodology. The purposive sampling technique was adopted to solicit the expertise, insights, and experiences of approximately twenty respondents who held management and supervisory portfolios in the organisation. The interview channel was the preferred research instrument used to collect and contribute towards the extrapolation of data from the study respondents. The findings in the study illuminate the significance of the prioritisation of the culture, behaviour and actionable tendencies that seek to eliminate and mitigate the risk permutations in these perilous and often life-threatening safety and hazardous construction sites. The study concluded by acknowledging the organization-wide responsibility and compliance with the manageable risk appetite and also illuminated the significance of monitoring and evaluating the perceptions and attitudes of personnel involved in these precarious and yet fundamental contributors of economic prosperity pertaining to infrastructure improvement, development and modernisation.

Read abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of electrical/electronic workshop climate on workshop accidents among self-employed electrical/electronic service personnel in Ebonyi state. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study was 622 registered (Unions) electrical/electronic service personnel. A sample of 120 was drawn from the population for the study through a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The study found that Regardless of the Administrative style; Number of the workshop users; Arrangement of the workshop and Available equipment in the electrical/electronic workshop respectively, there is an occasional rate of accident. But some types of accidents record varying rates of occurrence depending on the type of administrative style, number of workshop users, arrangement of the workshop, and workshop equipment in the said workshop. Based on the conclusions drawn from the findings of the study, the study recommended that Government should provide soft loans, start-up grants for the self-employed service personnel for the acquisition of the needed equipment; Government also should institute a fund that can help work accident victims to take care of the medical expenses.
