Influence of consensus orientation practices on performance of county governments in Kenya

Machel Waikenda · Peter M Lewa · Maina Muchara

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

The devolved system of governance was adopted to ensure development in all regions and effectiveness in service delivery for all Kenyans. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the consensus orientation practices on the performance of county governments in Kenya. The study used a descriptive and explanatory cross-sectional survey method. The unit of analysis was the county government. The counties in which data was collected helped in the generalization of findings to all the Kenyan 47 counties. For this study, a sample of 354 was arrived at. A simple random sampling method was adopted for selecting the respondents. The study used a questionnaire for the collection of primary data. Data analysis was done with the help of a statistical analysis program. Frequencies and descriptive statistics were obtained for the study’s variables and this information was presented in graphs and frequency tables. Inferential statistics included regression analysis that was used to test the significance between dependent and the independent variables. The researcher observed respondents’ rights to privacy and safety. The study established that consensus orientation had a significant influence on the performance of county governments in Kenya and concluded that consensus orientation influences the performance of county governments in Kenya. The study recommends that Governors need to sensitize county directors to work in consultation with other stakeholders to ensure that all feel part of the developmental agenda for the county. There is a need for county governments to set effective regulations through the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority to regulate and shape the county’s procurement procedures.

Health providers’ perspective of effect of copayment on delivery of effective health service under capitation in Kenya

Priscilla Nduku Wangai · Amos Njuguna · Joseph Ngugi

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

Co-payment is an out-of-pocket payment collected by the service provider from members capitated by a health scheme for the purpose of gatekeeping against the misuse of the services. This paper documents an assessment of the effect of copayment on the effectiveness of health services delivered under the capitation scheme in Kenya. The unit of analysis was the 1152 health facilities capitated by the National Hospital Insurance Fund to provide outpatient primary healthcare in Kenya as of July 2015. logit regression was used to analyze the data collected from a sample of 297 capitated health facilities. The Effectiveness of the delivery of health services was evaluated using three metrics; quality, accessibility, and affordability. The regression model for each of the metrics was constructed in order to examine the effect of copayment on the delivery of services. The results revealed that an increment of one unit on copayment increased the index of delivery of quality, accessible and affordable health services by .073, 4.349 and 79.4 respectively. The optimal amount of copayment is determined from the models using theories of calculus.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

This study examined the influence of supportive and participative path-goal leadership styles, and the moderating role of task structure on employee performance of coffee trading companies in Kenya. The study was guided by the positivism philosophy and used a descriptive correlational research design. The population comprised 180 senior managers of coffee trading companies in Kenya, and a sample size of 139 was determined using stratified random sampling.  Primary data was collected using questionnaires. The response rate was 84%. The descriptive statistics were means and standard deviations while the inferential analysis included factor analysis, correlational analysis, chi-square, and regression analysis. Results of multiple linear regression analysis revealed that supportive leadership style did not significantly predict employee performance, R2= 0.001, F(1, 110) = 0.118,  p? .05, ? = -0.040, p ? .05 but that participative leadership style significantly predicted employee performance, R2= 0.865, F(1, 115) = 735.111, p ?.05, ? = 0.943, p?05.  Task structure was found to moderate the relationship between path-goal leadership styles and employee performance, R2= 0.094, F(5, 101) = 6.92, p ?.05, ? = 0.208,  p? .05.  The study recommends that leaders of coffee trading companies should apply a participative leadership style with their employees with constant communication and consultation in order to achieve optimal performance.

Effect of developmental efficacy on leadership development

Emmanuel Mango · Jeremiah Koshal · Caren Ouma

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

The study investigates the effect of developmental efficacy (one of the elements of leader developmental readiness) on leadership development. The study was conducted among MBA students within private universities in Kenya. Data was collected through a validated instrument and correlation, one-way ANOVA, and regression analyses were performed. The results revealed that developmental efficacy significantly affects leadership development, F(1,286) = 79.803, p < 001, also developmental potency accounts for 21.8 percent of the variations in leadership development. The study implies that leadership developers ought to help leadership learners to gain higher developmental efficacy before or during the developmental program, for them to benefit fully from the leadership developmental interventions.

Supply chain integration and operational performance of Kenya’s public health sector

Anne Mbugua · Juliana Namada

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

This research objective is to determine the effect of the Supply Chain Integration dimensions on the operational performance of the of Kenya’s public health sector level five hospitals. The results are based on close-ended questionnaires from one hundred and sixty-four respondents working in the level five health facilities supply chain selected using simple random sampling. The data collected was subjected to completeness checks, before it was cleaned, coded, and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) for the generation of both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results show that Supplier integration (?1, = 0.276; p value=0.000), customer integration (?2, = 0.119; p value=0.016) and internal integration (?3, = 0.232; p value=0.000) have a significant effect on operational performance. The R2was 0.429, indicating that 42.9% of the variation in operational performance is explicated by the variation of Supply chain integration dimensions.  This implies that all three supply chain integration dimensions significantly influence operational performance. The study concludes that the government needs to internally integrate and embrace forward and backward integration with the customers and suppliers to leap the full benefits of an integrated health sector to accomplish the universal health care goals.

Focus strategy-firm structure fit and performance of star rated hotels in Kenya

Jane Nyokabi Njuguna · Maina Muchara · Juliana Namada

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of focus strategy-firm structure fit on the performance of star-rated hotels in Kenya. The study adopted the positivism research philosophy and descriptive-correlative research design. Multi-stage sampling that included proportionate stratified sampling and simple random sampling was used. The sample consisted of 267 general managers and functional managers from Kenya’s three, four and five star rated vacation and town hotels as in 2018. 253 managers responded out of which 59 respondents were found to represent hotels pursuing a focus strategy. Structural equation modeling was used for hypothesis testing. The study concluded that focus strategy-firm structure fit has a significant influence on the performance of star-rated hotels in Kenya. The study recommends that a hotel’s pursuit of focus strategy be internally consistent with its organizational structure.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of participative and achievement-oriented leadership styles on employee job satisfaction in commercial banks in Kenya. This study adopted the positivism research philosophy while building a descriptive correlational research design.  The target population of the study was 15,030 employees in all the 43 commercial banks licensed to operate in Kenya as of June 2018. , the study drew a sample size of 386 employees reporting to middle-level managers, using a stratified sampling technique. Data were collected utilizing a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics — statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The results of the study showed that a participative leadership style and achievement-oriented leadership styles positively and significantly predicted employee job satisfaction. From the results of the regression analysis after moderation, it was revealed that environmental contingency factors significantly moderated the relationship between path-goal leadership style and employee job satisfaction.
