Bekimpilo Bhebe · Marlé Van Eyk · Adele Potgieter

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

The increased digital acumen among students has necessitated institutions to adopt digital marketing platforms such as websites to enhance brand awareness for competitive advantage purposes. The study therefore investigated the influence of website use on brand awareness and its sub-factors in the Zimbabwean polytechnic context. The study adopted the positivist paradigm, a descriptive research design and is quantitative in nature. A self-administered online questionnaire was used to collect primary data and through convenience sampling, 492 valid and reliable responses were collected. The collected data was analysed using descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. The empirical results indicated a statistically significant relationship between website use and brand awareness, specifically when looking at the brand awareness sub-factors of top-of-mind and brand recall in the context of Zimbabwean polytechnics. However, a statistically insignificant relationship was noted between website use and brand recognition. The study proposed contributions to polytechnic marketers on website use to enhance brand awareness for their institutions to ensure competitive advantage. The empirically tested model provides a basis for future research in the marketing of polytechnics.

This study aims to analyse the influence of perceived advertising values which include informativeness, entertainment, and irritation on purchase intention through attitudes towards Instagram advertising. This study was conducted on Generation Z who followed Emina's Instagram account in Malang City. Using a quantitative approach, data was obtained through a questionnaire using the purposive sampling method and analyzed using the PLS-SEM model. The results showed that informativeness and entertainment had a positive influence on purchase intention, while irritation had no significant effect. In addition, attitudes towards Instagram advertising have been proven to mediate the relationship between the three elements of perceived advertising values and purchase intention. These findings reinforce the importance of creating informative and entertaining Instagram ads, while minimizing irritating elements to increase positive attitudes towards ads and consumer purchase intent. This research makes a theoretical contribution by supporting the theory of Planned Behavior and offers practical insights for marketers in designing advertising strategies on social media.

Adaptive public relations and marketing in tourism: how South African timeshare businesses responded to the Covid-19 crisis

Mlondi Mkhize · Zakia Jeewa

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2024

Read abstract

South Africa is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the African continent, with timeshares—vacation properties shared by multiple owners—being an important feature of the tourism industry as it contributes significant growth and sustainability of tourist destinations. After its introduction in the 1960s, timeshare gained popularity through its capability to provide luxury holiday affordability and security in South Africa. Since then, timeshare businesses have used traditional public relations, marketing, advertising strategies and tactics to increase brand awareness and reach sales targets. During the difficult COVID-19 period, global tourism declined drastically due to travel restrictions, extreme lockdowns and tight regulations, forcing businesses to adapt their marketing strategies to cope with unprecedented challenges and the loss of customers. Before the pandemic’s culmination, travel agencies and timeshares thus utilized digital marketing and social media to effectively strategise and publicly engage with their audiences online. Drawing upon McGuire’s (1969) theory of information processing, and Echtner and Ritchie’s (1993) destination image branding, a content and thematic analysis of two South African timeshare companies and their Facebook page content was studied to investigate the public relations tactics and marketing strategies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. Key findings reveal that timeshares engaged publicly with customers through posts which stimulated online participation, which included the sharing of images, information, updates, competitions and discounts, thus maximising the potential of social media to engage with stakeholders on a short to long term basis.

Nurul Rizki Utami · Rifelly Dewi Astuti

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

This research examines the influence of Social Media Marketing Activities (SMMA) on consumer behaviour towards local fashion brands in Indonesia. The study focuses on five key SMMA dimensions: interactivity, informativeness, personalization, trendiness, and word-of-mouth (WOM). It extends previous research by investigating the moderating effect of customer engagement levels on the relationships between SMMA dimensions, consumer attitudes, brand experiences, and purchase intentions. A quantitative approach was employed through an online survey distributed to 878 social media users who actively follow and purchase from local fashion brands. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse the data and identify the influence of SMMA dimensions on consumer attitudes, experiences, purchase intentions, and the moderating effect of customer engagement levels. The findings aim to identify the influence of each SMMA dimension on consumer attitudes, experiences, and purchase intentions, quantify the relative impact of each SMMA dimension on these consumer behaviour factors, determine the SMMA dimension with the strongest influence on consumer response, and investigate the moderating effect of customer engagement levels on the relationships between SMMA and the other variables. These findings provide valuable guidance for local fashion brands in developing effective social media marketing strategies to enhance customer engagement and drive purchase intentions.

Results indicate that while social media communications have an insignificant impact on customer-to-customer interactions (t-value 1.15), traditional marketing communications positively influence customer-to-customer interactions (t-value 11.87). Customer-to-customer interactions also found to positively influence brand preference (t-value 10.14) while brand preference positively influences customer decision-making (t-value 3.86) Additionally, customer-to-customer interactions positively affect customer decision-making (t-value 3.54), with brand preference mediating this relationship (t-value 3.85).
