What Drives Bank Profitability? A Panel Data Analysis of Commercial Banks in Bangladesh

Rana-Al-Mosharrafa · Md. Shahidul Islam

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2021

Read abstract

Bank profitability plays a significant role in the growth and development of an emerging economy. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of bank characteristics, industry concentration and macroeconomics variables on commercial bank profitability in Bangladesh from 2007-2017. Bank profitability is proxied by return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and net interest margin (NIM). The study is based on secondary data and Hausman test has been performed using STATA software in favor of fixed effect modeling. Panel regressions shows that cost efficiency has significant negative impact on ROA and NIM. The positive impact of loan to deposit ratio with ROA suggests that efficient fund management including investment and assessed expenditure should be emphasized. Bank size has significant negative impact on all the measures of profitability, which indicates that monopolistic competition will reduce banking profit. Credit risk has significant positive impacts on ROE. Industry concentration measured by CR3 is positively related with ROE and has significant negative relation with bank profitability (ROA). Among macroeconomic variables inflation has significant positive and bank spread has significant negative impact on ROE. The coefficients of all the macroeconomic variables have been found to be significantly related to bank profitability while measured by NIM. Our study recommends further research with other explanatory variables such as, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and deposit insurance to accelerate the model and construct the econometric model by using structural equation modeling, mediation effect modeling etc.

The participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire on 4-point Likert’s scale, which was adapted from Aebersold and Field (1997). Moreover, 10 students were recruited for two focus group interviews. The results revealed that Thai EFL students experience difficulties in using English reading strategies when they have to skip unknown words during the first reading (mean = 2.67, SD = 1.01) followed by varying reading speed rates according to the type of the reading passage (mean = 2.66, SD = 0.97), and guessing the meanings of unknown words by using the context clues (mean = 2.59, SD = 0.92) respectively. International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

Corruption in public institutions is a significant problem that stifles economic, social and environmental development worldwide. This predominates when there is a lack of transparency, inadequate record-keeping, and low public accountability. Accordingly, the questions this paper intends to provide answers to are two-fold. Firstly, what are the recurring patterns of procurement corruption in the South Africa (SA) public sector? Secondly, how can digital technology deployment assist in checking this trend? The desktop method was adopted through literature examination of studies relating to corruption, procurement, blockchain and digitization. We conclude by proposing a model/framework for adopting and using blockchain technology in public institutions to minimise corruption and the time taken for contract document preparation and acceptance. This study contributed to knowledge by evaluating the issues associated with public procurement and how blockchain and digitization can be adopted to help stern the tide of corruption in public institutions.

This study assesses the effect of green human resource management (GHRM) practices (overall) on the organization’s environmental performance (OEP) and to identify how the organizations can improve their EP by using GHRM practices through Green Employee Empowerment (GEE). The study was based on a questionnaire survey of 340 responses from the manufacturing sectors; the key respondents were one from each industry limited to top management, HR manager, quality manager, or employee of manufacturing firms. The questionnaires were tested for reliability and validity. To evaluate the hypothesis, data was examined using the PLS path modeling technique. The empirical findings show that the GHRM practices (overall) have a significant effect on OEP, and GEE mediates their relation. This research has theoretically contributed to the green HRM/HRM literature by establishing a link between GHRM practices and their EP outcomes in manufacturing companies. This study adds to the body of knowledge by looking at the indirect impacts of GHRM practices on OEP via GEE. The findings suggested that GHRM practices might lead employees to green empowerment in order to improve environmental performance.

Read abstract

This study aims to show that there is a positive relationship between Islamic intellectual capital, corporate governance, disclosure of corporate social responsibility on the performance of maqashid sharia, and this study wants to show that reputation strengthens this positive relationship. This study's sample consists of 33 annual reports from 11 Islamic banking companies in Indonesia for the 2016-2018 period, chosen using the purposive sampling method. This study was tested by using the Moderated Regression Analysis test. The results of this study indicate that Islamic intellectual capital, corporate governance, disclosure of corporate social responsibility have a negative effect on the performance of Islamic maqashid. The role of reputation can not increase the relationship of Islamic intellectual capital to the performance of maqashid sharia. Reputation also can not increase the relationship of disclosure of corporate social responsibility to the performance of maqashid sharia, but reputation has been proven to improve the relationship of corporate governance to the performance of maqashid sharia. Financial development and foreign direct investment nexus: A systematic review of literature

Mollah Aminul Islam · Md Nahin Hossain · Muhammad Asif Khan · Mohammad Raihanul Hasan

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

In this study, we review the literature to find how the financial development of a country attracts foreign direct investments for a sustainable real sector development of the country. The area is least focused on literature. Thus we don’t limit our search and review to any time or database or journal category. We find the theoretical logic and empirical evidence so far available in the literature. Our review finds that the development of the financial sector of a country is one of the most important attractors of FDIs. Theoretically, financial sector development works as a symbol of trust and goodness to the new potential investors and a good resource allocation channel for the existing investors. However, very few researchers find that FDIs are more prone to countries with a low developed financial system which may happen due to the presence of risk-taker foreign investors and risk-averse domestic entrepreneurs.
