Green transformational leadership and organizational sustainability in Egypt’s renewable energy sector: The mediating role of green talent management

Gihan Ibrahim

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2026

Read abstract

Research on organizational sustainability (OS) remains a global debate. Consequently, organizations have become increasingly interested in adopting leadership styles to drive sustainability goals. Thus, in the present study we examined the impact of green transformation leadership (GTL) on OS and its dimensions (environmental, social, and economic), focusing on the mediating role of green talent management (GTM). We employed a quantitative methodology, using questionnaires for data collection and SPSS (version 25) and AMOS (version 23) for data analysis. The sample consisted of lower-level leadership, including executive management and department heads from Egypt’s renewable energy organizations. We gathered 250 valid responses. The findings indicate that GTL has a positive impact on OS both directly and indirectly through GTM. Also, we found that GTM mediates the relationship between GTL and OS. These findings strengthen the view that the effectiveness of GTL is fundamentally reflected in the adoption of sustainable strategies and is the cornerstone for enabling an organization to achieve OS. Our research addresses a gap in the literature by examining the impact of GTL on OS while considering the impact of GTM, which previous researchers did not consider. In addition, we provide managerial implications for renewable energy organizations as well as limitations and directions for future research.

Analysing the role of consumer behaviour, and the adoption of green business models and circular economy principles in apparel SMMEs

Kiara Ramdial · Winiswa Mavutha

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2025

Read abstract

This research explores the social and environmental impacts of fast fashion in Durban-based SMME, focusing on sustainability opportunities and challenges in the local clothing industry. Adopting a qualitative research design, using content analysis and snowball sampling, the study investigates the practices of apparel enterprises, the role of consumer behaviour, and the adoption of green business models and circular economy principles. Key findings indicate that there is greater awareness and implementation of sustainable practices in large businesses, including the use of renewable energy and fair labour practices. But there is insignificant implementation by small businesses owing to financial constraints and resource limitations. The study finds gaps in consumer education about the negative impacts of fast fashion and calls for specific education and policy intervention. The research uses dynamic capabilities theory to justify how companies reshape resources in reaction to pressures for sustainability and defines community involvement as a new aspect of sustainable action. Its recommendations involve investment in sustainable design, education for consumers, and collaboration among multiple stakeholders. The research adds to sustainability discourse and calls for localized, adaptive strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of fast fashion in emerging markets.

Understanding the factors influencing individuals’ intention to buy second-hand clothing: A Mauritius perspective

Shelley Tyne Tyne Tang Fat Sang · Xue Bing Peng

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2025

Read abstract

Individuals are becoming more aware of the negative effects of the rapid fashion industry and are shifting to second-hand clothes. Due to its potential to minimize clothing waste, purchasing second-hand garments is reflected as environmentally friendly. Using an online questionnaire survey, this research examines the factors influencing consumers’ purchasing intention of second-hand clothing via the mediation of individualism and product attitude by applying the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 25.0 and the Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) 25.0 to analyze the data collected information. The proposed models are expanded by additional construct factors to evaluate their influence on purchase intention. The results indicate that online second-hand clothing purchase intention (PI) is partially explained by the theory of planned behavior (TPB) with product attitude (PA) and individualism (IN). Among the additional factors encompassed, consumer perceived value (CPV) and consumer perceived risk (CPR) negatively impacted the consumer’s intention to buy second-hand clothing. Additionally, this study validates the effectiveness of the integrated model of TPB in interpreting customers’ buying intentions for second-hand clothing. This study also yielded theoretical and managerial implications, as well as proposals for further research.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

This study examines the impact of green perceived value and green perceived risk on repurchase intention mediated by  green trust in Adidas green products. This study is explanatory and employs a quantitative methodology. The study's population comprised individuals who purchased Adidas green products. This study employs a purposive sampling technique. The sample size consists of 190 respondents. The data utilized in this study were gathered by questionnaire. The acquired data were analyzed using SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) PLS. The findings indicated that Green Perceived Value positively enhances repurchase intention and trust. Furthermore, Green Perceived Risk adversely affects repurchase intention and trust, while Green Trust enhances repurchase intention. Green Trust can enhance the relationship between Green Perceived Value and Green Perceived Risk regarding repurchase intention, but its mediation role is partial. This study highlights that to increase repurchase intention, Adidas should focus on high green perceived value through consistent product quality and emphasize its environmental commitment to attract younger consumers. Although green perceived risk is low, Adidas should minimize negative risks and maintain product quality. Additionally, green trust plays a crucial role in strengthening consumer confidence and attracting new customers.

The influence of ecolabels in the consumption of green products: a study on Durban consumers

Obed Chauke · Raymond Hawkins-Mofokeng

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

The purpose of the study is to ascertain the influence of ecolabels in the consumption of certified green products. It explores ecolabels in Durban, hoping to gain valuable insights into ecolabels’ role in influencing the consumption of certified green products. The study employed a quantitative and a non-probability sampling method to understand the influence of ecolabels among green consumers in Durban. To ensure that the data represents the diversity of Durban consumers, a random sampling method was adopted. The data was collected using questionnaires and analysed using the IBM SPSS Version 25. The study employed a sample of 384 customers from retail malls within selected Durban suburbs. The findings revealed that consumers generally have a positive perception of ecolabels and are likely to recommend certified green products. However, the data also revealed that there is scepticism around certified green products as they are considered expensive and can perhaps be attributed to the high cost of certification, credibility issues and the cost associated with the ecolabelling. There is a potential trend towards wider acceptance, with more respondents trusting the authenticity of ecolabels than not. The study also found that older respondents and those with higher income tend to have a more positive perception of ecolabels, potentially due to higher disposable income and greater familiarity with the concept. This suggests that addressing concerns about cost and credibility could further increase positive consumer perception of ecolabels. Businesses can use these findings to develop strategies to address consumer concerns about the cost and credibility of certified green products. They can also target marketing efforts towards older demographics and higher-income consumers who are more receptive to ecolabels. Policymakers can use the findings to evaluate the effectiveness of existing ecolabeling programs and also develop strategies to increase consumer awareness and trust in ecolabels, especially younger audiences.

Driving green purchasing: how knowledge and consciousness shape attitudes and intentions to use plastic bottles in East Java

Gilang Indra Permana · Christin Susilowati

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

As a country contributing 1.4 tons of plastic waste to the world's waters, Indonesia requires a mature green concept implementation from various stakeholders. However, it is regrettable that no FMCG company has a comprehensive strategy to commit to switching from single-use plastics. This concept enables companies to play in an underutilized niche market. This study fills the knowledge gap by investigating the complex relationship between environmental knowledge, environmental concern, consumer attitudes, and purchase intentions for plastic-bottled beverages. Data were obtained through an online questionnaire distributed to 297 respondents in the East Java. Data were processed using path analysis, revealing that environmental knowledge and concern, as well as consumer attitudes, have a positive and significant relationship with green purchase intention. Environmental knowledge and concern also positively and significantly affect consumer attitudes. Moreover, positive consumer attitudes can reduce the influence of environmental knowledge and concern on purchasing environmentally friendly products. This confirms that positive consumer attitudes towards environmentally friendly products are not the only factor influencing their purchase intentions.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2024

Read abstract

This study examines the significance of green purchase behaviour in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and explores the mediating and moderating roles of waste management and eco-regulation in this context. The theoretical frameworks of resource-based view was utilized to conceptualize the relationships and dynamics between green purchase behaviour, waste management, eco-regulations, and sustainable performance in SMEs. Insights from these theoretical perspectives help in understanding how internal resources, capabilities, external pressures, and institutional factors interact to drive sustainability practices and business outcomes. Using a cross-sectional design, a questionnaire survey was administered to 225 SME owners. Using the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) technique of Partial Least Squares (PLS), this study empirically analyses the relationships between green purchase behaviour, waste management practices, eco-regulations, and sustainable performance in SMEs. The results confirmed that green purchase behaviour (GPB) positively impacts waste management (WM). Furthermore, WM positively impacts financial performance (FP), social performance (SP) and environmental performance (EP). The results validate the mediating role of WM. The moderating results revealed that eco-regulation (ER) does play a moderating role in proposed relationships. As SMEs worldwide grapple with the imperative to adopt sustainable business practices, this study provides valuable insights and a roadmap for SMEs seeking to navigate the complex landscape of environmental responsibility and social accountability. The findings provide practical guidance for SMEs striving to strike a balance between economic success and environmental stewardship, fostering a holistic approach to sustainability of SMEs.

Read abstract

Green human resource management, or GHRM, is a relatively new idea but is already thought to be an essential tool for fostering sustainable behavior in businesses. We intended to find out how GHRM affects worker pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) by using worker engagement (WENG) and the green psychological climate (GPC) as mediators. The study tested and analyzed the suggested model using the PLS-SEM technique via SmartPLS 4. To gather data from 324 valid respondents—HR managers and employees—we used a quantitative study approach. These participants were chosen randomly from three industrial parks in Afghanistan. The analysis's findings demonstrated that GHRM possessed a positive impact on employees' PEBs. Furthermore, the employees' pro-environmental behaviors PEBs are fostered by the green psychological climate GPC and worker engagement WENG. The study presents new findings indicating that, in the Afghanistan industrial context, GHRM both directly and indirectly affects employees' PEBs through the partially mediating effects of GPC and WENG. The present research is significant because it fills in the gaps in the literature and offers new perspectives on GHRM. Notably, there aren't many GHRM studies that focus on Afghanistan's industrial sector. Furthermore, in analyzing these connections and evaluating the mediation effects, this study contributes to the body of knowledge currently available on PEBs.  Additionally, this study makes a practical contribution to the industrial sector by offering guidance on how to improve managers' understanding of GHRM policies, enhance employee PEBs at work, and foster an environmentally friendly organizational culture.

Read abstract

Green human resource management practices are widely accepted and are essential for encouraging sustainable behavior in organizations. We aimed to ascertain the relationship between employees' eco-friendly behavior and Green HRM practices by employing environmental awareness as a mediator. we analyzed and tested the suggested model Employing the PLS-SEM method through SmartPLS 4. The current study employed a quantitative research approach to collect data from 346 actual respondents. From six major public universities in Afghanistan, these participants were selected randomly. Based on the investigation, it was shown that green recruitment and selection, green training and development, green performance management, and green reward and compensation possessed a positive impact on employees' eco-friendly behavior.  Additionally, environmental awareness promotes eco-friendly conduct among the staff. The research provides updated outcomes showing that, through the partially moderating impacts of environmental awareness, green HRM practices in Afghanistan's public universities both directly and indirectly influence employees' eco-friendly behavior. The current study is noteworthy since it provides fresh insights into green HRM. Additionally, by examining these relationships and assessing the mediation effects, this work adds to the amount of literature already accessible on environmentally friendly behaviors.  Furthermore, current research makes a practical contribution to public universities by suggesting guidelines on how to increase academicians' awareness of green HRM practices, enhance eco-friendly behavior at work, and develop environmentally friendly behavior.

Bridging the GAP: exploring the nexus between green human resource management, organizational citizenship behavior towards the environment, employee green commitment, and environmental performance in hotels

Zhen Tang · Mohammad Yunes Amini

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2023

Read abstract

The relationship between green human resource management (GHRM) and environmental performance (EP) has received little attention in the past, despite the hotel management discipline's mediation analysis being one of the areas examined.  To fill this research gap, the study expands upon the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) and social identity theory (SIT). It also goes beyond what has already been written by examining the relationship between environmental performance and green human resource management by examining the roles of Employee Green Commitment (EGC) and Organizational Citizenship Behavior towards the Environment (OCBE). According to a survey conducted on 273 hotel employees, it has been found that GHRM plays a positive and significant role in promoting Organizational Citizenship Behavior towards the Environment (OCBE), Employee Green Commitment (EGC), and environmental performance (EP) of hotels. Additionally, implementing green human resource management can have a considerable and favorable influence on both environmental performance and employees' commitment to eco-friendliness. It was observed that organizational citizenship behavior toward the environment and employee green commitment play a significant role in mediating the relationship between Green human resource management and hotel environmental performance. The data from the survey were analyzed using Smart-PLS 4 which involved conducting validity and reliability tests on the instruments and testing the hypothesized relationships using SEM analysis. Based on this report, it is recommended that HR managers and hotel top management develop green HRM policies to promote sustainability in the hospitality industry.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2023

Read abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate how green human resource management (GHRM) influences environmental performance (EP) in hotels in South Africa: the mediating and moderating role of environmental concern (EC) and green human capital (GHC). The study followed the quantitative research design and a self-administer questionnaire was employed during the data collection process. Data was collected from two hundred fifteen hotels in a cross-sectional survey. The participants of this study were three-star, four-star, and five-star hotels in Gauteng province. The data was analysed using SmartPLS 4.0. The empirical findings of this study show that there is a significant positive relationship between GHRM and the EP of hotels. The study further shows that the relationship between GHRM and EP is partially mediated by EC and the relationship is also moderated by GHC at an average weight. The study has the following limitations and suggests some new study areas. First, the cross-sectional nature of the survey limits the ability to separate cause-and-effect relationships, and a longitudinal study will help to improve the results. Second, the survey was done on firms in one industry and one country. To improve the generalisability of the findings, further studies can include other industries in other countries. This paper fills a gap in the literature by exploring external business variables mediating and moderating the relationship between EC and GHC and contributes to the discussion on the contradictory results regarding the relationship between GHRM and EP.

Plastic has become the most waste in the world. No less evidence that the plastic we buy directly or indirectly from modern retail has caused global waste that cannot be disposed of from the face of the earth. Therefore, studies need to find out what factors can be used to reduce consumptive activities on plastic bags in modern retail. In this study, research data was obtained from businesspeople to confirm the factors that reduce purchase intention so that customers and businesspeople of modern retail can use alternatives to plastic bags such as paper bags, biodegradable bags, or goody bags. By exploring questionnaire data using SEM PLS, it was found that the elements of Green Procurement, Green Supply Chain Management, Green Marketing Strategy, and Customers' Environmental Attitudes positively and significantly became the main role in influencing purchase intention with a green concept to replace single-use plastic bags in modern retail.
