Determinant of Earnings Quality

Diyah Pujiati · Supriyati · Riski Aprillia Nita

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2022

Read abstract

The quality of earnings indicates the current or future capability of the company to support the decisions made by managing board and other stakeholders. This research have to goal to examine the determinant of earnings quality in Indonesia, including: IFRS convergence, accounting disclosures, and audit committees. Data were acquired from official website in period of 2016-2018 and number of data was 212 observation data. Method of analysis involved regression test and classical assumption test. Result of research showed that the audit committee had a positive effect on earnings quality, while the convergence of IFRS and accounting disclosure cannot affect earnings quality. Research model was tested using control variables, respectively leverage, liquidity and company size. The test found that leverage is the only control variable that affects earnings quality. Information in financial statements is not the most important information to investors. Audit committee and creditor contribution play more important role in decisions regarding earnings quality.

THE IMPACT OF FIRM CHARACTERISTICS ON THE LEVEL OF VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE:

Isam Abdelhafid A. Milad · Ali Altug Bicer

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2020

Read abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of some bank characteristics (age, size, profitability and leverage) on the extent of voluntary disclosure in annual reports of listed banks in Borsa Istanbul. All (13) listed banks represent the sample of the study. The study adopted the deductive approach by developing hypotheses based on the relevant theories and results of prior studies. The study also applied the panel data strategy to analyze the collected data from annual reports across five years (2013-2017). The results indicated that there is a positive relationship between each bank characteristic (age, size, profitability and leverage) and the level of voluntary disclosure. The results also show that profitability has a big impact on the level of voluntary disclosure followed by leverage, whereas, age and size have a small effect.

CEO Power and Auditor Choice

Bo Ouyang · Zenghui Liu · Christine Sun

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2015

Read abstract

In this paper, we examine the impact of CEO power on auditor choice. We are motivated by the competing financial reporting incentives arising from CEO power. Our empirical finding suggests that powerful CEOs are more likely to hire high-quality auditors as a signal of superior financial reporting quality. We contribute to the literature of auditor switch and extend the research on the links between CEO power and firm behaviors.

Can Accounting Flexibility Increase or Decrease Earnings Quality?

Indah Masri

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2025

Read abstract

This study looks at the effect of accounting flexibility on earnings quality in public companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period 2016 to 2019. This study uses two models to measure earnings quality, namely ERC and earnings persistence. The results showed that accounting flexibility, namely the limitations of companies to carry out accrual earnings management, can reduce earnings quality, as shown by the abnormal accrual model which shows a significant positive coefficient direction, and for the ERC model and earnings persistence which shows a negative and significant coefficient direction. The higher the level of accrual earnings management up to a certain limit point, the more incentive company managers will have to increase accounting flexibility and switch to real earnings management (Xu and Yang, 2013; Masri, 2018). Theoretical contributions show that the higher the level of accrual earnings management up to a certain limit point, the more incentive company managers will have to increase accounting flexibility and switch to real earnings management (Xu and Yang, 2013; Masri, 2018; Purba, Surya, Joshi & Tiagy, 2023). The Implications of this research show that accounting flexibility is carried out when abnormal accruals reach the highest limit point reflected in accounting choices in net operating assets in the balance sheet, so in this case it results in a low level of earnings informativeness and earnings persistence.

Effects of Emotional Intelligence on the Relationship Between Individual and Contextual Factors on the Quality of Internal Auditing in Federal Educational Institutions in Brazil

Cristiane Silva Moura · Joshua Onome Imoniana · Edicreia Santos · Luiz Miguel Renda Santos

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2022

Read abstract

This research investigated the effects of individual and contextual factors on the quality of internal audit moderated by emotional intelligence. The research was operationalized from a research instrument consisting of 39 questions, answered by 93 internal auditors from Federal Educational Institutions in Brazil. Descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling were applied. Results showed that individual factors positively and significantly affect the quality of the audit. The work resources, although considered important, did not influence the quality of the audit, unlike the contextual factor of time budget pressure, which affects it positively and significantly. Regarding the moderation of emotional intelligence in individual factors and contextual factors, this was not supported. Thus, concerning the originality, research on the influence of emotional intelligence on the results of the work of the internal auditor is recent in the literatures, this study therefore, boosts the ex ante sources and also support the regulating bodies and practitioners.  Finally, as a suggestion for future research, it is recommended that the studies reach the population not investigated in this study, being internal auditors from other sectors of the economy, external auditors or even auditors from the private sector.

The Effect of Regional Differences on the Value-Relevance Proposition for Intangible Assets

Kwangsoo Lim · Wesley Jones

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2023

Read abstract

We examine the value relevance of intangibles reported by technology firms in electronics industries and any regional difference between Southern and non-Southern firms in the relative importance of how value relevance is reported. For technology firms, the essential asset in their valuation is intellectual property, which idiosyncratic accounting practices could have either capitalized or expensed. We are interested in the intangible assets and goodwill on balance sheets and amortization expenses from income statements, which together capture the magnitude of a firm’s intellectual property. We present evidence that the market value of a firm is negatively associated with the size of its intangibles but positively associated with the size of goodwill and amortization expenses. We find that this relationship between the market value of a firm and measures of intangibles is statistically stronger for Southern firms than for non-Southern firms. We interpret this finding as a manifestation of stronger accounting conservatism among Southern firms due to regional cultural differences. We find that the value relevance of intangibles weakened significantly during the 2008 financial crisis, and we interpret the intertemporal difference as a spillover effect of the stringent application of the fair value accounting standard (SFAS 157) to financial assets.

Analysis of the Determinants for the Publication Speed of Annual Financial Statements

Wirmie Eka Putra · Fredy Olimsar

International Journal of Finance & Banking Studies · 2022

Read abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the simultaneous and partial effects of Company Age, Financial Distress, Independent Commissioners, Institutional Ownership, and Profitability on the Publication Speed of Financial Statements. The study population is companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange between 2018-2020. It can draw the following conclusions from the findings: At the same time, Company Age, Financial Distress, Independent Commissioners, Institutional Ownership, and Profitability influence the speed at which financial statements are an issue. In some cases, it may appear that not all variables significantly affect the annual financial report issuance rate. Company Age, Financial Distress, Independent Commissioners, and Profitability affect the Publication Speed of Financial Statements, but Institutional Ownership does not. By considering the impact of Company Age, Financial Distress, Independent Commissioners, Institutional Ownership, and Profitability on the speed of issuing annual financial reports. These companies expect to release yearly financial statements as soon as possible so that they can optimize their performance to attract investors to invest.
