This study examined the various leadership styles used at marine services companies in Sub-Saharan Africa. A quantitative structured closed-ended questionnaire was used to gather data from its sample respondent. The target population was 215 employees. However, every second element was selected systematically to produce a sample size of 107. The findings of this study showed that the overwhelming majority of respondents agreed that their managers practice transactional leadership styles. On the other hand, most respondents disagreed that their managers practice laissez-faire and transformational leadership styles. Based on the findings, the company's management should teach and train staff to perform their responsibilities efficiently. Furthermore, the management of the marines services company is advised to be proactive, assist staff, build connections, give resources, and avoid a laissez-faire leadership approach.

Read abstract

Organizations are experiencing increased challenges due to changed environmental circumstances that threaten their survival including institutions of higher learning. There is therefore a growing concern for universities to be strategically aligned so as to meet the growing challenges of the societies in which they operate by creating ecosystems that drive industrialization through the generation of new knowledge, technology transfer and support of new start-ups. Additionally, concerns have been raised as regards the quality and relevance of services offered by the universities in Kenya. Owing to these limitations, there is a need for the higher education sector to consider inspirational motivation practices between the leaders and their followers so as to enhance performance. This study, therefore, sought to establish the effect of inspirational motivation on the academic performance of selected universities in Kenya. The study was anchored on transformational leadership theory. Positivism research philosophy was adopted where explanatory and descriptive research designs were used for guiding the collection and analysis of data. Primary data was collected from deans of schools and chairmen of departments in the selected universities. The study established a significant positive effect of inspirational motivation on academic performance of universities at p<0.05; t=8.057 and hence concluded that inspirational motivation positively affects university academic performance of selected universities in Kenya.

Predicting innovative work behaviors through transformational leadership

Bruce Gashema

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2021

Read abstract

To stay competitive and viable in today's rapidly evolving and highly hostile market climate, companies need to concentrate more on innovation. In this regard, the specific quality of transformational leadership has been strongly linked to organizational innovativeness. However, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership and the innovation behavior of employees. The literature review developed in the current study is fundamentally centered on how transformational leaders value innovation by facilitating organizational learning to foster innovative behavior among employees. Corporate social responsibilities as an organizational level factor that can drive employee attitudes were also examined as a moderating effect in this relationship. The rationale of the relationship of the variables is supported by both transformational leadership theory (TFL) and social exchange theory (SET). Data were collected from corporate social responsibility engaged SMEs operating in Rwanda. Using Cranach’s alpha reliability and validity were tested while structural equation modeling (SEM) was used in analyzing data. The findings of this study intend to fill some gaps in the current literature such as the introduction of CSR in the relationship between top managerial level leadership, organizational learning, and innovation behavior of employees, also introducing SET to explain such important relationship

Bussecon Review of Social Sciences · 2019

Read abstract

The issue of leadership influences the performance in many areas and although the area has been researched the relationship between the style that leaders adopt and its impact on performance is not well known. This is because employees respond differently to every style and if you combine whole style it emerges that some styles yield better in certain sectors and poorly in certain areas. This is why this study sought to examine how leaders who adopt passive styles influence performance in the county government.

Trickle-down effect of CEO transformational leadership on employee’s innovative work behaviors

Bruce Gashema · Juniter Kwamboka Mokua

International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy · 2019

Read abstract

Despite the theoretical foundation that links Transformational leadership (TFL) with innovation behavior, previous studies have overlooked on Transformational leadership and innovation behavior at the individual level relationship but paid less attention to how transformational leadership qualities of top leaders would advance innovative work behavior within the organizational setting. To date, the impact of Transformational leadership at a top executive level on employee’s innovative work behavior (IWB) within an organizational setting has not been dealt with in-depth. However, using transformational leadership theory, this study uncovers the pivotal role of innovation culture (IC) and managerial innovation (MI) in the relationship between CEO transformational leadership and employee’s innovation behavior in SMEs. A cross-sectional design with a total of 434 employees from 24 SMEs operating from Rwanda was analyzed using structural equation modeling to evaluate the relationship between the variables developed in the study. The findings of this study support our hypothesized model.

How Transformational Leadership Fuels Employee’s Creative Performance Behaviors in the Workplace?

Bruce Gashema

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

Supervisory transformational leadership behavior is attracting a widespread interest due to its fundamental quality that spurs subordinate confidence and optimism in the workplace. Although, despite the mounting evidence that links transformational leadership to different organizational and individual innovative outcomes, it is not yet been documented whether transformational leadership (TFL) can strengthen employee’s creative performance behavior in the workplace. Recently, Successful entrepreneurs thrive under competitive pressures in today’s high customer sensitivity to quality and innovative services. Hence, it's now clear that workplace creativity would be a potential solution for driving business success today. Although, the vital role of supervisory transformational leadership behavior in enhancing creative performance behavior of employees has not been dealt with in depth. However, the present paper aims to validate the potential and possible relationship between supervisory transformational leadership style and employee’s creative performance behavior in the workplace. To prove or disprove the assumptions underlined in this study, a cross-sectional research design, was conducted using data from 14 commercial banks operating in Rwanda (412 of total respondents). A variety of methods and tools were employed to examine the relationship between the variables hypothesized in this study. We conducted CFA in SEM-Amos, mean and standard deviation using SPSS and also Hayes macro process to measure the possible effect of each variable in this model. The overall results support our hypothesized model.  In this regard, we believe that we have obtained comprehensive results proving and validating the usefulness of our hypothetical model.

Relationship between Leader Behaviours and Subordinates’ Work Performance

Neria Magombo-Bwanali

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2019

Read abstract

The paper assesses the relationship between leader behaviours and subordinates’ work performance in the context of tax administration. Data were collected in Malawi using two validated questionnaires administered online for subordinates and team leaders at a field office of a tax administration. Frequency distributions were used to identify dominant primary leader behaviours and the Spearman’s rank-order correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between leader behaviours and subordinates’ work performance. Participative path-goal leadership behaviour is the most common primary leadership behaviour that team leaders in tax administration employ. Secondly, supportive and achievement oriented leader behaviours have a significant relationship with subordinates’ work performance in tax administration. The study concluded that achievement oriented path-goal leadership behaviour could be effective for public organisations involved in law enforcement. It is recommended that leaders should conduct a self-assessment of their leadership; adopt the relations-oriented leadership behaviours and incorporate coaching during performance evaluation exercise; and that organisations should equip leaders with leadership and management skills through training. The study is limited by the small sample-size, therefore, future studies could repeat the assessment with a larger sample and determine the mathematical equations for predicting the effect of each leadership behaviour on subordinates’ work performance.

Strengthening Managerial Innovation Behavior in the SMEs

Bruce Gashema · Yongqiang Gao

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science · 2018

Read abstract

Managerial innovation as an internal change agent plays a central role in coping with the speed of today’s fast-paced customer demand and highly competitive market, yet previous studies paid less attention to the potential measures of strengthening managerial innovation behavior within organizations. Drawing from transformational leadership theory, the current study shed new light on this issue by examining the role of CEO transformational leadership (TFL), innovation culture (IC) and cross-functional integration (CFI) in advancing managerial innovation behavior in SMEs. A cross-sectional study with a sample of 434 respondents from 24 SMEs operating in Rwanda was conducted. To genuinely analyze the relationship between the variables hypothesized in this study, we used structural equation modeling (SEM) and bootstrapping technique using Amos 23 and SPSS 24. The overall findings revealed that the relationship proposed in the model were significantly supported. However, our new mechanism implying innovation culture and cross-functional integration in the relationship between CEO transformational leadership and managerial innovation behavior, provide a substantial contribution to management literature.
