The banking sector is a linchpin of economic growth and development, with its prosperity heavily influenced by various factors of the economy. The cooperative model of banking to achieve both of personal and community development goals has been chosen as an instrument for fostering high and stable financial growth. As a key metric for assessing the financial health and profitability of banks, including cooperative banks, NPAs plays a crucial role in evaluating their stability and resilience. Notably the Indian Banking system, now, compares with the global benchmarks, reflecting commendable Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE) and Credit risk (NPAs). The purpose of this article is an attempt to analyze the trends of NPAs (Gross NPAs and Net NPAs) of selected Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) and assessing the profitability using ROA and ROE over the period of 2016-2022 by employing the linear trend analysis and multiple regression model. Secondary sources provided the information gathered for the study. The study indicates that the trend of NPAs is fluctuating over time with low minimal correlation. GNPAs and NNPAs have a significant impact on ROA for the selected UCBs- Nagarik Samabay Bank (NSB) and Gauhati Cooperative Urban Bank (GCUB). However, during the period 2020-2022, GNPA sand NNPAs did not exhibit significant influence on ROE for Gauhati Cooperative Urban Bank. Hence, the dynamism of NPA and their impact on profitability on banking sector will reflect the growth of financial sector of the economy.

The research was conducted to see how cost of funds (COC), and non-performing loans (NPL) on profitability is measured by return on assets (ROA). The research method used is descriptive and verification methods. Secondary data is sourced from Regional Development Banks of West Java and Banten Provinces in Indonesia quarterly financial reports for 2014 – 2022, while the data analysis technique uses multiple linear regression analysis. The results of the research are that COF and NPL has a negative and significant effect on ROA. Simultaneously, COF and NPL have a significant effect on ROA. The results of this research are useful for bank management in determining funding strategies with low cost of funds, and credit management strategies so that non-performing remains healthy.

Commercial banks in Kenya operate in quite dynamic financial market environment and continue to experience stiff competition in the provision of financial services. The liberation of the financial markets has resulted into an upsurge in the number of institutions providing financial products and services, threatening the future of Kenyan commercial banks. This study aimed at determining the effect of strategic alliances on competitive advantage of commercial banks in Kenya. The objectives were to determine effect of joint ventures, equity alliances, and joint research and development on the competitiveness of Kenyan banks. The following theories informed this research; Resource Based View theory, competitive theory, and resource dependence theory. Causal research design was adopted where all the 42 Kenyan commercial banks formed the target population. Census survey sampling design was applied and semi-structured questionnaire used. Reliability and validity results were used to improve the research instrument prior to the actual data collection. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Study found that joint venture (?=0.435, p=0.000) equity alliances (?=0.227, p=0.018), and joint research and development (?=0.0.612, p=0.000) had positive significant effects on competitive advantage. With a coefficient of determination (R-square) of 68.9% and overall p-value of 0.000, the study concluded strategic alliances have a statistical significant effect on competitive advantage. The study recommends that managements of commercial banks should fast-truck implementation of such alliances to for improved competitiveness.

This study examines the correlation between industry-specific loan disbursement and profitability in the banking sector of Bangladesh, with a particular focus on the influence of targeted lending on profitability. The study examines the impact of different variables such as total assets, total revenue, non-performing loans, and sector-specific loans (agricultural, transportation, construction, textile, pharmaceuticals, and food procurement), on profit after tax (PAT) by analyzing data from 41 commercial banks between 2009 and 2022. By employing various techniques such as Pooled Ordinary Least Squares (POLS), Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS), and the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), we have determined that total assets have a noteworthy adverse effect on PAT in both POLS and 2SLS models. Conversely, construction loans have a positive influence on PAT in these models. The total revenue consistently has a favorable effect on the profit after tax (PAT) in all models. In the GMM model, transportation loans and textile loans have a notable adverse effect on PAT, but pharmaceutical loans have a slight favorable effect. The presence of non-performing loans, total loans, agricultural loans, and food procurement loans does not have a substantial impact on the profitability after tax (PAT) in any of the models. So overall total revenue, construction loan and pharmaceutical loan have a positive impact on PAT and total assets, transportation loan and textile loan have a negative impact on PAT. This study emphasizes the significance of strategic lending in underdeveloped industries and provides practical implications for banking professionals and regulators to identify high-risk lending sectors and devise measures to improve long-term profitability.

The main goal of this study is to evaluate customer perceptions of the competitiveness of Absa Bank in South Africa. To achieve this objective, the study is divided into two sections, which were designed as the main research questions. The first question aimed to determine customer perceptions of the level of bank competition in South Africa, while the second question focused on customer perceptions of Absa's competitiveness within the South African banking sector. It was revealed through an Absa Bank communication that Barclays Bank (UK), the major shareholder, was withdrawing from Barclays Africa Group aka Absa Bank due to ongoing uncertainties in the African market. This departure has resulted in mixed reactions from the market, with customers expressing skepticism about the potential impact on the bank's performance. The study was conducted at the Durban Central branch, which serves approximately 150,000 customers. A sample of 400 walk-in customers at the branch was selected using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Out of the 400 questionnaires distributed, 13 were discarded due to incomplete responses. This resulted in 387 questionnaires being returned. The collected data was analysed using the latest computerized Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0. The findings of the study indicate that competition does exist within the banking sector, with banks employing pricing strategies to compete for customers. Most customers perceive Absa Bank as being competitive in the market. As a recommendation, it is suggested that branch management regularly conduct customer surveys to engage customers and identify areas for improvement that can be incorporated into the branch operations.

This paper aims to examine the financial performance of Bangladeshi listed commercial banks. The study analyzed the financial performances of banks categorized into three generations—first, second, and third—based on their year of commencement of operations in the country. The data of a total of 24 banks, 8 from each generation, listed in the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), has been collected from audited financial statements for the time period of 13 years, from 2010 to 2022. Data has been analyzed using different ratios of profitability, liquidity, capital adequacy, operational efficiency, and credit risk. The ANOVA test also has been used to make a comparison of profitability—the return on assets (ROA), and return on equity (ROE) of the banks of different generations. According to the results, the average profitability ratios in terms of ROA, and ROE of the second-generation banks showed their credibility than banks of other generations; while first generation banks kept higher liquidity, and capital adequacy with higher credit risk than the banks of other generations. The first-generation banks also showed a lower cost-expense ratio, and a higher efficiency in terms of operation, than the banks in the second and third generations. The research also discovered that the profitability of banks of different generations significantly varies from one another.

Bank Indonesia Regulation No.13/1/PBI/2011 requires banks to regularly conduct a self-assessment using the RBBR (Risk-based Bank Rating) risk approach at the individual and consolidated levels. This health assessment is called RGEC (Risk Profile, Good Corporate Governance, Earnings, and Capital). This research aims to determine the effect of bank soundness with Risk Profile, Good Corporate Governance, Earning and Capital on Firm Value at Conventional Banks listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange for the period 2019 to 2021. The sampling technique used in this study is purposive sampling. The sample criteria are conventional banking companies registered and publish complete annual financial statements that do not merge during 2019–2021. This study used 40 samples based on predetermined criteria. Analysis of the data in this study using Microsoft Excel 2019 and hypothesis testing using panel data regression analysis with the EViews version 12.0 program with a significance level of 5%. The results of this study are (1) Risk Profile using Non-Performing Loan does not affect firm value, (2) Good Corporate Governance has a positive effect on firm value, (3) Earning using Return on Assets has no effect on firm value, (4) Capital using Capital Adequacy Ratio has a positive effect on firm value. The implications of this research for banks are to increase company value; conventional banks can pay attention to the Risk Profile, Good Corporate Governance, Earnings, and Capital (RGEC) to improve their performance and for investors to be a reflection of good information to invest. The limitations of this study are that some banking companies do not publish complete financial statements, and research variables, namely profile risk and earning, do not support the theory, so they require further research.

This study aims to investigate the association between non-performing loans (NPLs) and the profitability of banks in Bangladesh. The data of twenty-five listed banks for the twelve years spanning from 2010 to 2021 have been analyzed to achieve the research objective. through the use of the ordinary least square (OLS) regression model, we found that the NPL has a negative significant impact on the profitability determined by the return on asset (ROA). In addition, the study revealed that the bank size, which is represented by banks’ total assets, is also inversely related to the profitability of the sample banks used in this research. The study concludes that the stakeholders, particularly the management of the banks, as well as the regulators, should be more cautious about NPLs and should try to lessen the level of NPLs because it can bring devastating results both on the microeconomic as well as on macroeconomic metrics of a developing country like Bangladesh.

The primary purpose of this research study is to reflect on financial anomalies, especially bank scams in Bangladesh. This study is an empirical approach developed through a well-structured Likert-scaled questionnaire to indicate different human behaviors, psychologies, and emotions that considerably impact financial incongruities in Bangladesh. The proposed model supported the structural equation model (SEM) and used SPSS Amos (Version 24) to build an attitudinal and behavioral model that reflects the complex relationships segment of this paper. Results show people try to rationalize irrational, unethical, and impertinent things and issues to achieve self-gain. Furthermore, corporations are treated as an entity for which they cannot be punished. Apart from this, human natures like greediness, dissatisfaction with what people have, societal status, possession and position, competition with peer groups for luxury, and tendency to imitate bad things are also responsible for bank scams in the Bangladeshi economy. Last but not least bad loan and default culture developed in the banking industry of Bangladesh only lacks execution laws, rules, and regulations.

The outbreak of the Coronavirus, which has caused a global crisis, has affected all aspects of human life. This pandemic has also seriously challenged the business environment, monetary and financial markets, and the performance of banks in countries. Accordingly, this paper aims to answer the question: “What is the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic crisis on the performance of the Canadian banking industry? Thus, the main purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the performance of the Canadian banking industry. For this purpose, the related literature was systematically reviewed to extract performance indicators. Then, a quantitative approach and a multiple case study strategy were used to examine the hypotheses and answer the questions. So, three Canadian banks including RBC bank, TD bank, and BMO were selected as cases. Document- and records-based method used to collect public data from official, and well-known economic and financial sources. For data analysis, structural equation analysis and correlation test were considered using Amos 28 and APSS 27. Based on the results, although the Covid-19 pandemic has shocked the Canadian banking industry, like many businesses, but because of its high capabilities, they have been able to manage the crisis well and come out of it successfully. The results show that the average profitability and efficiency of Canadian banks decreased slightly during the pandemic period, but it was not significant. In addition, during this period, business risk has increased slightly, but this situation has gradually returned to normal. Plus, some indicators such as the average of ROE, ROI, EPS, etc. after passing the initial shock, they have found a better position than the pre-crisis. Considering the newness of the pandemic and the lack of similar knowledge and experience that has surprised people, the results of this research contribute to the theoretical development of the literature, and its results can be used in the financial, banking, and commercial fields. Since the basis of the investigations was limited to the data of only three banks, therefore, it should be a little cautious in generalizing the results.

The purpose of this research paper is to extensively investigate and examine the effect of the CAMEL model variables on the profitability and financial soundness of the thirteen Jordanian commercial banks for the period of 2013 to 2019, the primary data were collected from the published audited financial reports of the Jordanian commercial banks. The study uses CAMEL model variables of Capital adequacy, Asset Quality, Management efficiency, Earnings ability, and Liquidity management to rank banks as per their overall performance and measuring their effect on banks’ profitability measures of Return on Assets and Return on Equity separately through applying the fixed effect regression model. It is concluded that the ranking approach shows that Bank of Jordan was in the top position followed by the Capital Bank of Jordan. Jordan Ahli Bank was in the lowest rank in most positions. Furthermore, the empirical results indicates that Non-Interest Income to Total Assets and Net Interest Income to Total Loans and Advances have significant positive relationships with both profitability measures whereas cost to Total Income and Non-Interest Income to Total Assets have strong negative relationships with the profitability measures. In addition, Equity to Total Assets has strong negative relationship with ROE. The study suggests that Jordanian commercial banks can improve their profitability through the concentration on main activities, efficiently managing their capital adequacy, maintaining high quality level of lending policy, and utilization of full assets. Additionally, the current study recommends conducting more studies on banks’ performance determinants with an expanded scope and using more financial models besides the CAMEL model.

Increase in losses borne by banks as a result of inadequate operational risk management practices and the adverse impact on banks’ financial performance has been a major concern to bank management and regulators. This study analysed the impact of operational risk management practices on the financial performance of commercial banks in Nigeria. 10-years (2008 - 2017) secondary data extracted from audited financial statements of selected commercial banks in Nigeria was used for the study. The data was analysed using the Linear Multiple Regression Model. The results showed that there is a positive relationship between operational risk management and the financial performance of banks. The findings revealed that sound operational risk management practices impact positively on the financial performance of banks. We, therefore, recommend that banks’ management should deploy adequate resources towards understanding operational risk to ensure sound operational risk management and improved financial performance of banks.

The practice of mock bank is an institutional arrangement to expose potential bankers to basic rudiments of banking operations with the ultimate aim of increasing the profitability of the organization through employee performance. This study assessed the impact of mock bank practices on employee performance in the banking sector as a panacea for repositioning the Nigerian economy with a specific focus on Union Bank Plc. The objective is to examine the contributions of operational experience to staff, ascertain the impact of professional ethics on commercial banks in Nigeria and identify the contributions of knowledge of organizational structure on the operations of commercial banks. T-statistics was used to test the three hypotheses. Results showed that there is a significant relationship between experienced, knowledge of job ethics, and organizational structure by employees before recruitment and performance at the workplace when compared to those recruited before training. Further results revealed that employees that had mock bank experiences perform better with less supervision. It was recommended that reinforcement of mock bank practices in tertiary institutions in Nigeria and allotment of higher credit units to mock bank practice should be encouraged.

The introduction of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1991 by the Government of India (GoI) made it very clear that the viability of commercial banks is conditioned on their ability to make profits. In a globalized world, the whims and fancies of business cycles govern the fate of banks and a recessionary phase hampers the bank’s ability to pile on the profits thereby increasing their stock of non-performing assets. India, recently, is placed in a very bizarre situation, — some of the renowned banks are reporting huge losses but there is a very limited impact on stock markets. Strategically, the government, however, has taken corrective measures to arrest the growth of non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks. This paper builds upon a time series model capturing the position of NPAs of banks in India (excluding foreign banks operating in India). Empirically, there is a uni-directional causal relationship running from NPAs of banks to growth. Theoretically, what we can conclude is that imposing strict lending norms on banks actually manifests itself into a deeper recession, lowers growth and in turn aggravates the NPA problem further.
